· Beautiful mountain resort · Opportunity to see the `Top of Europe' · Walking option
One of the world's most dramatic mountain regions, the Bernese Oberland is also home to alpine villages, flower-filled pastures and lush green meadows. From our base in the peaceful, traffic-free resort of Wengen, we journey over dramatic mountain passes, stroll by the shores of sparkling lakes and have the opportunity to travel to the `Top of Europe' on the Jungfrau rack railway.
ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Wengen We fly to Zurich and meet our Tour Guide for the transfer to the village of Lauterbrunnen. Here we take the short but exceptionally scenic train journey to the charming village of Wengen, situated at 1,274 metres. Accessible only by rail, this is a perfect base for exploring the Swiss Alps. We spend seven nights at our hotel on a half board basis. DAYS 2 7 Wengen & the Bernese Oberland With a superb location and backdrop of towering snow-covered peaks, the delightful village of Wengen is virtually traffic free and has a wonderful network of paths radiating into the surrounding countryside. Make the most of these beautiful surroundings during the next six days and join our excursions to venture further afield. Included excursions: Berne & Thun (full day) We enjoy a guided walking tour of the charming Swiss capital. Located at the foot of the Alps, this cosmopolitan city is characterised by lovely sandstone buildings, pretty arcaded streets and beautiful fountains. We see the magnificent Gothic cathedral, the mediaeval houses of the Kramgasse and the famous 12th-century clock tower. On our return journey we make a stop in lakeside Thun, with its picturesque castle and charming mediaeval centre. Three Passes Tour (full day) A day of magnificent scenery awaits as we take to the mountains over the Grimsel, Susten and Furka Passes. We enjoy views of the Rhone Glacier and both the Bernese and Valais Alps as we follow the high altitude frontier between German and Italian speaking Switzerland. Swiss Lakes (full day) We visit two of Switzerland's stunning lakeside towns, Brienz, whose crystal-clear lake is surrounded on all sides by forested mountains; and Lucerne, an enchanting mediaeval town situated on the north shores of Lake Lucerne. Here we see the 14th-century covered bridge, slender-spired churches and fine mediaeval houses that line the Old Town's ancient streets and squares. This area is renowned for its woodcarving and we make a stop at a local woodcarving centre for an insight into the craft. Grindelwald (half day) We board the mountain train in Wengen and journey via the Kleine Scheidegg mountain to Grindelwald, a popular holiday resort set at the foot of the daunting north face of the Eiger, where two vast glaciers from the Jungfrau Mountain descend almost to the village itself.
