ITALY TO THE ADRIATIC 8 days from £719 Hidden Italy Apulia & Basilicata Trulli houses, Alberobello Locorotondo Lecce · Experience unexplored Italy · Excellent 4-star accommodation · Opportunity to stay in a converted trullo · See the best of the deep south The beautiful regions of Apulia and Basilicata in the deep south of Italy remain some of the most unexplored areas of the country. Our tour provides an insight into these magnificent regions, including the intriguingly unique trulli and sassi houses as well as many more architectural treasures. ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Alberobello We fly to Bari and transfer to our hotel, situated in an excellent position for our exploration of the `Deep South', where we stay for the next seven nights. For your convenience, you are able to guarantee your place on the optional excursion detailed on Day 6 (please see opposite). DAY 2 Alberobello As an introduction to Apulia today, we include a tasting of local Apulian specialities in a traditional masseria; a fortified farm villa that has been tastefully converted. We will be able to sample local dishes, many made with produce from the farm. DAY 3 Matera The fascinating city of Matera, located in the north of the Basilicata region, is famous for its sassi stone houses. Carved directly into the rock, these cave dwellings were originally home to Turkish monks, but later became homes, shops, churches and even a hospital. Today many lie empty and abandoned, an eerie warren that has been preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some are undergoing restoration and are once again being used. A local guide will take us on a walking tour through some of the sassi and there will be some free time for lunch. The town has come to recent fame as the setting for many scenes in Mel Gibson's film The Passion. We will also see the church of Santa Maria d'Idris, carved right into the rock and decorated with fine 14th-century frescoes. DAY 4 Lecce Known as the `Florence of the South' because of its extravagant baroque architecture, Lecce's history goes back to Roman times. Discover the impressive Roman amphitheatre and intricately carved Church of Santa Croce on this included excursion, accompanied by excellent local guides. DAY 5 Alberobello, Locorotondo & Martina Franca We have the chance to see countless trulli houses today as we visit the Valley of Itria, where I TA LY Trani Castel del Monte Bari Ostuni ALBEROBELLO Locorotondo Matera Martina Franca Lecce To view dates & prices click here 14 To book click here
