DAY 7 Assisi World-renowned as the birthplace of St Francis, Assisi is a delightful hilltop town surrounded by mediaeval ramparts. The main sights include the magnificent Basilica of St Francis, whose interior is richly decorated with frescoes by Giotto; St Francis' burial place; and the 13th-century cathedral, its facade adorned with intricately carved figures and rose windows. DAY 8 Chianciano Terme/UK We return to Rome airport for the homeward flight. YOUR HOTEL Hotel Villa Ricci (3-star), 7 nights half board. This attractive family-run hotel is close to the historic centre of Chianciano and a short walk from the main square, Piazza Italia. It has two buildings linked by a covered walkway and facilities include a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and comfortable lounge.
WALKING IN TUSCANY

On 6 June and 12 September departures we are delighted to offer you the opportunity to explore the wonderful Tuscan landscapes on foot. Optional excursions to Florence, Siena and Assisi are available during your stay. Our three included walks are accompanied by a local walking guide and include a light lunch: Montepulciano Pienza Walking along part of the Wine Road of the Sienese Hills we enjoy panoramic vistas of the rolling countryside. We make a stop in Monticchiello before reaching Pienza where there will be some free time before returning to Chianciano by coach. Easy to moderate walking 4 hours. Distance 10 miles. San Quirico d'Orcia Sant'Antimo We walk along part of the pilgrimage route to Rome through the Tuscan hills, threaded with tiny streams and olive groves, and enjoy superb views of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo. Easy to moderate walking 3½ hours. Distance 8½ miles. Pienza-Bagno Vignoni Leaving from Pienza we pass Pieve di Corsignano and the archaeological site of Cava Barbari, walking through open countryside to Bagno Vignoni. We spend a little time here exploring this picturesque village before returning to the hotel by coach. Easy to moderate walking 4 hours. Distance 10 miles. Travel arrangements are as detailed in the main itinerary.
