Relax amidst the idyllic scenery of orchards and vineyard-covered hillsides in Provence, where tranquillity, culture and fine cuisine combine to create the perfect holiday destination. ITINERARy DAy 1 London/Greoux-les-Bains By air: We fly to Marseille and transfer to Greoux-les-Bains. By rail: We depart from London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet on the Eurostar and TGV service to Aix-en-Provence via Lille. From here you will be transferred to Greoux-les-Bains. We spend seven nights on a half board basis in Greoux-les-Bains, a delightful spa town, situated on the River Verdon to the north of Aix and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in France. Renowned for the health-giving properties of its thermal springs, the town is home to a charming market and lovely craft shops. DAy 2 Riez & Moustiers-Ste-Marie Our included half-day excursion takes us across the Plateau de Valensole. We stop in Riez, a charming unspoilt town with ancient fortifications and Roman ruins, to visit a bee farm to see how lavender honey is produced. We continue to Moustiers-Ste-Marie, one of the most beautiful villages in France, and enjoy a stroll through the pretty streets where shops sell the vibrant Provencal pottery that has been produced here since the 17th century. DAy 3 Aix-en-Provence Today we visit Aix-en-Provence, the former regional capital. The majestic tree-lined avenue of Cours Mirabeau is the citys heart. Explore the narrow winding streets of 16th and 17th-century houses, shady gardens and small squares. And dont miss the mediaeval art treasures in the Cathedral of St Sauveur, including tapestries that once hung in Canterbury Cathedral. DAy 4 Greoux-les-Bains Enjoy a day at leisure to explore the town, set on the banks of the Verdon and surrounded by fragrant fields of lavender and herbs. Perhaps walk up to the ruins of the castle for superb views; see the pretty church of Notre Dame les Ormeaux; or visit a stained glass and mosaic workshop and museum, where you can learn more about these intricate crafts. DAy 5 Gorges du Verdon Today we are offering an optional excursion to the Gorges du Verdon, the Grand Canyon of Provence, named for the turquoise colour of its waters. The 21-kilometre gorge, the deepest and widest in Europe, was carved by the waters of the Verdon through the limestone. DAy 6 Ste-Maximin & Cassis Join our optional excursion to Ste-Maximin-de-la-Ste-Baume, where we will have time to wander the alleyways of this ancient pilgrimage town and visit the basilica housing relics said to be those of Mary Magdalene and Saint Maximin. We continue to the picturesque Mediterranean fishing village of Cassis, hemmed in by soaring white cliffs. DAy 7 The Luberon Our final included excursion takes us to the idyllic scenery of the Vaucluse region and the Luberon. The forested mountains are dotted with hilltop villages and ancient chateaux. We visit a number of these villages, including Bonnieux and Gordes, before ending the day at the lavender museum in Coustellet. DAy 8 Greoux-les-Bains/London By air: We return to the airport for the homeward flight. By rail: Transferring to Marseille, we travel to Lille by TGV, continuing on to London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet by Eurostar. yOUR HOTEL Hotel Villa Borghese (3-star), 7 nights half board. A real gem of a hotel, the Villa Borghese stands in its own delightful tranquil gardens. Leisure facilities include an outdoor pool, sauna and tennis court plus a health and beauty centre. The restaurant offers superb food, and for relaxation there is a large terrace, bar and lounge. Travel Arrangements By air: Scheduled flights by British Airways between London Gatwick and Marseille; departing at 1355h and arriving back at 1820h. By rail: Eurostar service from London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Lille; departing at 1000h (London St Pancras) /1015h (Ebbsfleet) and connecting with the TGV service to Aix-en-Provence. The return journey from Marseille takes the TGV to Lille and onward Eurostar to Ebbsfleet and London St Pancras, arriving back at 1845h (Ebbsfleet)/1903h (London St Pancras).
