ITINERARy DAy 1 UK/Albi By air: We fly to Toulouse, meet our Tour Manager and transfer to Albi and our hotel. By rail: We meet our Tour Manager and join the Eurostar service to Lille from London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet, then connect with the TGV train to Montauban and transfer to Albi for five nights. DAyS 2 5 Albi Albi is a delightful red-brick town steeped in history on the banks of the River Tarn. Our guided walking tour through the mediaeval old quarter takes us to see the enormous 13th-century Cathedral of Ste Cecile, one of the most remarkable Gothic cathedrals in the world. Albi is the birthplace of Toulouse Lautrec, and the 13th-century palace contains the most comprehensive collection of his work. We offer a programme of included and optional excursions to explore the surrounding area. Included excursion: Carcassonne & Castres (full day) We travel to Carcassonne, one of the most dramatic towns of the Languedoc region. The double walled, turreted fortress that crowns the hill above the River Aude is the largest and most impressive in Europe. Wander through the narrow streets, along the battlemented walls and visit the beautiful Church of St Nazaire. En route we stop at the pretty town of Castres for a stroll through the charming riverside quarter, where old tanners and weavers houses overhang the River Agout. Optional excursions: Ville-Bastides (full day) Many fortified towns or ville-bastides were built around the River Dordogne during the Hundred Years War. We visit two wonderful examples, Najac with its photogenic castle and lovely half-timbered and stone-tiled houses that seem to tumble down the hill to the valley below; and Cordes, one of the oldest and best-preserved bastides with steep mediaeval cobbled lanes, now home to delightful shops and bars. Gaillac & the Gorges de lAveyron (full day) Taste some of the regions fine wines at a local Gaillac vineyard and explore the soaring limestone cliffs of the magnificent Gorges de lAveyron. DAy 6 St Cirq-Lapopie, Cahors, Rocamadour & Payrac A scenic days drive into the beautiful Dordogne takes us to St Cirq-Lapopie, perched dramatically on the cliffs edge high above the River Lot; Cahors, famous for its Pont Valentre, as well as its delicious red wine; and Rocamadour, built almost vertically into the rocky backdrop of the Alzou Valley; before reaching the delightful small village of Payrac for a two-night stay. DAy 7 The Dordogne Valley Our panoramic tour passes honey-coloured riverside cliffs and visits photogenic villages, where many of the ochre stone houses are cut from the rock face itself. We will also see the bustling market town of Sarlat with its mediaeval old quarter and perhaps take a boat trip on the river. DAy 8 Payrac/UK By air: We transfer to Toulouse airport for the homeward flight. By rail: Our coach takes us to Bordeaux station for the TGV service to Lille and onward Eurostar to London St Pancras and Ebbsfleet. yOUR HOTELS ALBI Best Western Grand Hotel dOrleans (3-star), 5 nights (3 nights half board, 2 nights bed and breakfast).
