DAyS 2 7 Barga This delightful walled town of fine palazzo, colourwashed houses and mediaeval buildings is one of the most attractive of the Tuscan hill towns. Take time to explore - perhaps visit the 11th-century cathedral, standing above the town and exquisitely decorated with Romanesque carvings. Five excursions are included during your stay: Florence (full day) Celebrated as the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is steeped in cultural treasures its architecture is bold and confident and its art galleries house some of the finest paintings and sculptures in western Europe. Our excursion reveals the legacy of this artistic revival as we see the magnificent cathedral, crowned by its huge terracottacoloured dome; the tall, graceful campanile, designed by Giotto; and the lovely Church of Santa Croce. Siena (full day) In constant combat with rival Florence during the Middle Ages, Siena is characterised by twisting streets, mediaeval archways and tall, crenellated towers. Famous for the riotous Palio horse race that takes place twice a year in the Piazza del Campo, Siena is also known for its vast cathedral, built in distinctive black and white marble. Pisa & Lucca (full day) The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most enduring images of Italy and it wont fail to impress. It enjoys a beautiful setting in the Field of Miracles close to the majestic cathedral and baptistery, whose splendid blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles make for an unforgettable sight. We continue to Lucca, once the most important town in Tuscany. See the remains of the vast Roman amphitheatre and explore the mediaeval lanes and squares, all enclosed by stone ramparts. The Apuan Alps (¾ day) We drive through the scenery of the Apuan Alps towards the extensive marble quarries at Carrara. This gleaming white stone was chosen by Michelangelo for his sculptures and has been extracted here since Roman times. Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (half day) Witness the beautiful mountain scenery of the Garfagnana region today, with its distinctive mountains and lakes, mediaeval towns and villages. Well visit the lively town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, guarded by a fine 14thcentury castle. DAy 8 Barga/UK We return to Pisa airport for the flight home.
