As well as the regions famous sights of Florence and Siena, we also include excursions off the beaten track. Join the locals at the traditional market in Castiglione; watch fishermen land their catch on the beautiful island of Elba; and absorb the timeless atmosphere in Volterra  this is unspoilt Tuscany at its best. ITINErAry DAy 1 UK/Massa Marittima We depart for Pisa where we meet the Tour Manager and transfer to our hotel in the atmospheric Tuscan town of Massa Marittima for seven nights. DAyS 2  7 Massa Marittima We have six days to enjoy our Tuscan retreat, perched on the top of a high hill, with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The mediaeval Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of the town, with many of the main sights just a few steps away. We have an excellent programme of excursions, all of which are included: Florence (full day) Crowded with artistic and architectural treasures, Florence is sure to be a highlight of your holiday. The superb collections of art and sculpture in the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia and Bargello draw art lovers from around the world, while many of the citys palazzo and squares are adorned with intricate carvings and statues. Why not walk to the Piazzale Michelangelo for spectacular views over the whole city? Siena (full day) We journey through scenic countryside to the atmospheric mediaeval city of Siena, visiting en route the ruined Abbey of San Galgano, one of the finest Gothic buildings in Italy. Siena reached the peak of its power and wealth in the 13th century and is exceptionally well preserved. Castiglione della Pescaia (¾ day) Located on a hillside near to an ancient fishing village, Castiglione is a charming resort town. Dominated by the 16th-century Aragonese Castle, the town holds a traditional market where we have the opportunity to shop for local goods. Elba (full day) We cross by ferry to the island of Elba, where a panoramic sightseeing tour will show us the lovely white sandy beaches, mountainous interior and unspoilt villages for which Elba is known. We continue to Portoferraio, a fortress town where Napoleon spent part of his time in exile. Volterra (¾ day) Volterra commands a majestic position surrounded by volcanic hills. The town is predominantly mediaeval and has fine Roman remains and a good Etruscan museum. DAy 8 Massa Marittima/UK We transfer to Pisa airport for the homeward flight. This attractive small hotel is a converted palazzo, located in the very heart of the old mediaeval town within the stone walls and just off the Piazza Garibaldi. It offers comfortable rooms, a lounge, bar and breakfast room. Evening meals will be taken in one of the nearby restaurants. Two nights have been left free for you to make your own choice from the excellent selection of restaurants in the village.
