See the treasures of exotic Morocco, experience the ancient traditions of the Berber people and visit rugged peaks and shifting desert dunes on this epic passage from legendary Marrakech through the rocky Atlas Mountains.
ItInerary Day 1 UK/Marrakech We fly to Marrakech, where we stay for two nights. Day 2 Marrakech This colourful city enjoys a spectacular setting between the golden desert and the towering peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. Todays tour of the city will introduce us to some of the most impressive sights. At its heart is the bustling square, Djemma El Fna. We visit the Koutoubia Mosque and the Saadien Tombs, two mausoleums dating back to the 16th century. Their wonderfully decorated walls and ornate ceilings are amongst the most visited of Moroccos many treasures. After a visit to the Bahia Palace we continue to the old Medina, with time to take lunch. This afternoon we wander through the souks and alleyways of the city. The sights and fragrances of the bustling markets assail us from all sides as we pass stalls selling exotic spices, perfumed oils, silver and gold jewellery, leather goods, carpets and rugs. At a dinner show this evening at Chez Ali Fantasia, we will be treated to traditional Moroccan fare, such as lamb, couscous and exotic fruits. During our meal we enjoy a variety of folklore performances, followed by a spectacular equestrian show. Day 3 Marrakech/Ouarzazate Today we travel into the Atlas Mountains and over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, then on to the Berber village of Ait Ben Haddou. The village is home to an impressive ksar a collection of adjoining buildings built together for defence. You may recognise the village as it has appeared in a number of films, including Lawrence of Arabia. We visit the kasbah of Taourirt, with its deep ochre-coloured walls, before reaching Ouarzazate, where we stay overnight. Day 4 Ouarzazate/erfoud Another day of Moroccos incredible scenery, passing through stunning red valleys and great canyons past villages, nomad shepherds and kasbahs, as we drive to Erfoud via Skoura. En route we pass through the beautiful Dades Valley, a spectacular land of rugged peaks, then through the red-rock walls of the wonderful Dades Gorge. After passing by Tinghir we visit the dramatic Todhra Gorge and soon reach the oasis town of Erfoud, where we stay tonight. Day 5 Merzouga & Zagoura We rise early this morning for a very special experience sunrise over the stunning dunes of Merzouga. We return to our hotel for breakfast, then depart for the journey to Zagoura. Our route takes us through barren, inhospitable lands, making for a somewhat eerie experience. We pass through Tazzarine and on to Zagoura, our base for tonight. Day 6 Zagoura/Marrakech Today we drive through the arid Valley of the Daraa, lined with steep walls of dark rock, and through the Anti-Atlas range to Ouarzazate, where we stop for lunch. We return to Marrakech for our final two nights. Day 7 Ourika The Ourika Valley nestles in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and is dotted with ancient settlements of mud-built houses. We visit an authentic Berber house, powered by a water mill, and enjoy lunch at the stylish Ramuncho restaurant in Ourika before returning to Marrakech. Day 8 Marrakech/UK After breakfast we transfer to the airport for the flight home. yOUr HOteLS MarraKeCH Hotel atlas asni (4-star), or similar, 4 nights half board.
