Journey from the prettiest port on the Atlantic to the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Uncover delightful villages off the beaten track, capture the romance of mediaeval France in Carcassonne, stand in awe of the amazing Pont du Gard and discover the vivid contrasts of two very different French coasts.
ITINERARy DAy 1 UK/La Rochelle We fly to Bordeaux and transfer to our hotel in La Rochelle for a threenight stay. DAy 2 La Rochelle & Ile de Re Perhaps explore the old harbour before joining an optional excursion to Ile de Re, a long narrow island fringed by sandy beaches, salt marshes and oyster beds. DAy 3 Rochefort, Fouras Peninsula & Marennes Todays included excursion takes us to Rochefort, built to protect the coast from English raids, pausing en route at the Fouras Peninsula to admire the sea views before we round our day off in style with a visit to the Oyster Museum in Marennes to taste this delicious speciality. DAy 4 St Emilion, Bergerac & Moissac We stop to enjoy the beautiful Bordeaux wine town of St Emilion, then follow the Dordogne River to Bergerac where we explore the Old Town, with its fountains and mediaeval houses. We continue through Bastide country to Moissac on the Tarn River where we spend two nights. DAy 5 Moissac, Auvillar & Lauzerte Enjoy a relaxing stroll around the abbey church of St-Pierre, before an included excursion to visit two of the most beautiful villages in France. Auvillars charming riverfront houses, triangular marketplace and riverside promenade are a pleasure to explore. Lauzerte is full of ancient buildings and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. DAy 6 Carcassonne & Carnon The magnificent old Cathar stronghold of Carcassonne is the largest fortress in Europe. There will be plenty of time to explore before continuing to Carnon, near Montpellier, for the final four nights. You are free on two evenings to sample the delicious local food. DAy 7 Montpellier Why not join our optional afternoon excursion to the lively city of Montpellier with its charming atmosphere and cafe-lined streets set amidst impressive parks and squares? DAy 8 Agde & Sete Todays included excursion takes us to Agde, a beautiful little town on the banks of the Herault River. We continue along the coastal road to the ancient port of Sete. Perhaps enjoy a boat trip before returning to the hotel. DAy 9 Aigues-Mortes, Nimes & Pont du Gard We travel to Aigues-Mortes, located on the edge of the beautiful Camargue. Built as a fortress port, its massive walls and towers remain virtually intact and offer fantastic views from the ramparts. We continue to Nimes, with its well-preserved amphitheatre and Roman temple. Our day ends at the soaring Pont du Gard, an ancient marvel of engineering and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. DAy 10 Carnon/UK We transfer to Montpellier or Marseille airport for the homeward flight. yOUR HOTELS LA ROCHELLE Hotel Saint Jean dAcre (3-star), 3 nights bed and breakfast. Located in the heart of La Rochelle overlooking the old port, this charming hotel has comfortable guest rooms with satellite TV, minibar and hairdrier. There are plenty of great restaurants within easy reach. MOISSAC Moulin de Moissac (3-star), 2 nights half board. This delightful hotel was originally a 15th-century mill. Within its ancient stone walls you will find a blend of traditional style and contemporary comforts. CARNON Hotel Neptune (3-star), 4 nights (2 nights half board, 2 nights bed and breakfast). The Hotel Neptune enjoys a wonderful location on the harbour. The hotel has a swimming pool, sun terrace and restaurant. All guest rooms have air-conditioning, satellite TV and hairdrier.
