DAY 3 Beijing Today we visit the Forbidden City, the ancient palace at the centre of modern Beijing. Within its walls lies a complex of courtyards, public halls and palaces, and, beyond them, the imperial family's private apartments. We also see the Temple of Heaven, a striking wooden monument built in the 15th century, used by the Emperor on just one day a year to pray for a good harvest. This evening we enjoy a Kung Fu cultural show. DAY 4 Ming Tombs & the Great Wall We head T W out from the city to visit the remarkable Ming Tombs, the resting place of 13 emperors. The tombs are approached along the Sacred Way, lined on either side by colossal stone statues of real and mythological creatures. We continue through farmland and pastures to Badaling for what is sure to be one of the highlights of our holiday, a walk along part of the Great Wall of China. This evening we enjoy a Peking Duck banquet at a local restaurant. DAY 5 The Summer Palace & Xian Our sightseeing in Beijing concludes with a visit to the Summer Palace. Built by the incredibly powerful Empress Dowager Ci Xi, the palace and its pagodas sit on the shore of tranquil Kunming Lake. From here we transfer to the airport for the flight to Xian where we stay for two nights. DAY 6 Xian & the Terracotta Warriors We spend T W the day exploring Xian and its environs, taking in the seven-storey Big Wild Goose Pagoda, originally part of a Buddhist temple complex. We continue to the Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Army, discovered in 1974 after lying buried for over 2,000 years. These countless individual life-size infantrymen, archers and horses were buried with the first Qin emperor to
