WALKING IN SCENIC PROVENCE
7 days from £649
With scenic landscapes and a quality of light unique to the Mediterranean, Provence is perfect walking country. We fly from London Gatwick to Marseille and spend six nights on a half board basis at the Hotel Villa Borghese in Greoux-les-Bain, the ideal starting point for our three included walks. Each walk is accompanied by a local guide and includes a packed lunch. Excursions to Riez & the Gorges du Verdon and Aix-en-Provence & Ste Maximin are also included. Lower Gorges du Verdon, St Laurent & Quinson Our path follows the lower gorges of the Verdon River through Mediterranean vegetation to the shores of a beautiful lake where we stop for our picnic. We continue to St Laurent from where our coach takes us to the picturesque mediaeval village of Quinson. Moderate walking 4 hours. Distance 6½ miles. Valensole & Lurs We begin on the Plateau de Valensole in an unrivalled setting of olive groves, golden fields of grain, almond trees and lavender as far as the eye can see. We visit a lavender distillery and after our picnic take a short bus ride to Lurs, a mediaeval hilltop village. We stop to visit a water-driven olive oil mill before continuing to Forcalquier, a mediaeval fortified town with narrow streets and shady squares. Enjoy a tasting of pastis in the local distillery before we return to the hotel. Easy walking 4 hours. Distance 6½ miles. DAY 6 Ste-Maximin & Cassis Join our optional excursion to Ste-Maximin-de-la-Ste-Baume, where we will have time to wander the alleyways of this ancient pilgrimage town and visit the basilica housing relics said to be those of Mary Magdalene and Saint Maximin. We continue to the picturesque Mediterranean fishing village of Cassis, hemmed in by soaring white cliffs. DAY 7 The Luberon Our final included excursion takes us to the idyllic scenery of the Vaucluse region and the Luberon. The forested mountains are dotted with hilltop villages and ancient chateaux. We visit a number of these villages, including Bonnieux and Gordes, before ending the day at the lavender museum in Coustellet. DAY 8 Greoux-les-Bains/London By air: We return to the airport for the homeward flight. By rail: Transferring to Marseille, we travel to Lille by TGV, continuing on to London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet by Eurostar. YOUR HOTEL Hotel Villa Borghese (3-star), 7 nights half board. A real gem of a hotel, the Villa Borghese stands in its own delightful tranquil gardens. Leisure facilities include an outdoor pool, sauna and tennis court plus a health and beauty centre. The restaurant offers superb food, and for relaxation there is a large terrace, bar and lounge.
