The Alcazar, Segovia packed with important works of art by artists including El Greco, Titian, Goya and Velasquez. It is crowned by an impressive 100-metre spire and boasts outstanding stained-glass windows. We stay for three nights at our hotel, with dinner included on two evenings. DAY 7 Aranjuez & Chinchon Our optional excursion to the little town of Chinchon offers plenty of surprises. The imposing castle will be our first view, but perhaps the favourite spot will be the oval Plaza Mayor, enclosed by elaborately galleried buildings and a great place to while away a sunny afternoon. Dont leave before trying the locally-brewed liqueur, anis, in one of the many cafes. We will also see the delightful 16th-century church. Goyas brother was a priest here and the church proudly houses one of the artists paintings. Then its on to Aranjuez for a visit to the opulent 18th-century Royal Summer Palace. With its exotically furnished interiors and exquisite gardens it is an oasis of green in the sun-baked Castillian plain. DAY 8 The Route of Don Quixote We experience the world of Cervantes hero Don Quixote today as we journey through the scenic region of La Mancha, following in the footsteps of the knight-errant and his squire. See the windmills in Consuegra that he fought against, mistaking them for giants; and visit Puerto Lapice, where he was knighted by the innkeeper, believing the local inn to be a castle. If you havent already read Cervantes classic novel, it will be at the top of your to do list when you return home. As our holiday draws to a close we have arranged a special farewell evening. Dinner will be served in the stunning Mudejar Moorish-style restaurant of the 3-star sister Hotel Carlos V, renowned for its traditional Spanish cuisine.
