Join us and discover two of the loveliest river valleys in Europe. ITINERARY DAY 1 UK - Avignon We fly to Nice and transfer to the ship in time for our sailing. DAY 2 Arles We arrive in Arles this morning and spend the day here, with its well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and mediaeval monuments. Youll visit the Roman arena during the included tour. After lunch onboard, you have the choice to explore Arles on your own, alternatively, an optional excursion is available which allows you to follow in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh, who settled in Arles at the end of the 19th century and loved the town. We travel through the landscapes of Provence that inspired so much of his work, and visit St Remy and Les Baux, an evocative mediaeval town boasting a fine collection of churches, chapels and mansions. The ship sails for Avignon in the evening. You will also be invited to a welcome reception on the ship tonight. DAY 3 Avignon & Viviers During the 14th century, Avignon was the headquarters of the papacy, and today this delightful city encircled by mediaeval walls is still dominated by the huge Palais des Papes. This official residence of the Popes was once richly decorated, and two chapels remain, covered in a deep lapis blue, a reminder of its former opulence. As Rome was in turmoil, Avignon was the ideal place for the popes to reside. We enjoy a delightful walking tour of the town, taking in the Palais des Papes and in the afternoon, you can choose to explore more at your leisure, or take advantage of the optional tour to Châteauneuf du pape. The ruins of two papal castles remain here, and the vineyards are still healthy, producing their famous red wine which youll get to try during the day. Set sail for Viviers this afternoon and dock in the early evening. After dinner, enjoy a leisurely guided stroll around this charming old town and its examples of Middle Age and Renaissance architecture. DAY 4 Tournon & Tain LHermitage Sit on deck and enjoy the passing scenery as we cruise to Tournon. We arrive at this peaceful Rhone River town midmorning where we will drive through the surrounding picturesque vineyards to Tain LHermitage an area famous for its red wine. After a tour of the winery and a taste of the produce, well visit the small Musee de Tain LHermitage and its collection of paintings. If the wine wasnt enough, well also make a visit to the Valrhona chocolate factory (time permitting). FR A NCE Lyon Tournon Viviers Châteauneuf du Pape Vienne Rhone Rhone S W ITZ . ITA LY.
