From the stunning architecture of Kiev and Odessa, Pearl of the Black Sea, to the naval port of Sevastopol, this 11-day cruise of contrasts also treats you to a horsemanship display where Cossacks show their unique skills.
ITINERARY DAY 1 UK MS Viking General Lavrinenkov We depart for Kiev and transfer to our ship. DAY 2 Kiev Spanning both banks of the Dnieper River stands the ancient city of Kiev, capital of the Ukraine. The arrival of Christianity in the 10th century provided the city with a splendid architectural heritage. A guided tour takes us to the magnificent Byzantine Cathedral of St Sophia, Rastrellis Baroque masterpiece. In the afternoon we visit the Cave Monastery, a magical underground labyrinth of candlelit shrines and monuments which were founded by monks in the 11th century. DAY 3 Dnieper River Relax on board as we enjoy a days cruising along the mighty River Dnieper, past the rolling landscapes of the Ukrainian countryside. See prominent hills, ancient forest groves, villages and lakes. DAY 4 Zaporizhya This morning we arrive in Zaporizhya, home of the legendary Ukrainian Cossacks, the mighty warriors who defended the empires borders. Located on the confluence of Lake Lenin and the Kakhova Sea, the city is also a place of worship for thousands of people who visit
its island, Khoritsa. Our tour shows us the best of the city, such as the Lenin Monument, dam and the citys hydroelectric plant, before visiting the Cossack Museum of Khortitsa. In the afternoon, we attend a traditional horsemanship show where Cossacks demonstrate their skills with firearms, swords, folkloric music and dance.
DAY 5 Kherson We arrive in Kherson in the late afternoon. Founded in 1778 by Catherine the Great, its humble fortress became the cradle of the Black Sea Fleet before it moved to Odessa. Our excursion takes us by boat to the nearby Fishermans Island on the Dnieper Delta. DAY 6 Sevastopol The Crimean port of Sevastopol, a city closed to the West until recently, was home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. During our visit there will be a tour of the city, including St Vladimir Cathedral and Admiral Nakhimov Square. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore some more, or you may like to join our optional excursion to the Black Sea Choir Concert. We will dock here for the night.
