ITALY TO THE ADRIATIC Piedmont  Gastronomic King of Italy 8 days from £859 " Explore with the truffle-hunters " Undiscovered region " Dine in local restaurants on two nights " Slow Food Fair option Sample robust red wines and sparkling spumante, savour local delicacies including the rare white truffle, learn the secrets of Piedmontese cuisine as you dine in delightful local restaurants and discover bustling Turin, home to the famed Turin Shroud. This is a true gastronomes tour of a little-visited region, all from the comfort of our wonderful hotel. ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Nizza Monferrato We fly to Turin and transfer to our hotel, which is situated not far from the historic town of Nizza Monferrato. The surrounding countryside, with its hilltop villages, ruined castles and vineyards, is quite lovely. We stay for seven nights half board, with two evening meals taken at local restaurants. DAY 2 Slow Food & Alba We visit the home of the Slow Food Movement, an idea that is spreading far and wide and promotes a return to traditional methods of cooking and food production. We visit the founding estate in Pollenzo and, after an introduction to the movement, we will have a wine tasting in the Banca del Vino. Organised geographically, we will be able to sample a selection of superb wines from the different regions of Italy. From here we continue to Alba, a mediaeval city of narrow winding alleys and home to the world-renowned white truffle. The autumn harvest is celebrated with exuberant festivals dedicated to this most precious delicacy. You will have time for an independent lunch and to explore at leisure. DAY 3 Truffle Hunters House & Canelli This morning we visit La Casa del Trifulau, the TruffleHunters House. Here we enjoy a short presentation about truffles, including a walk around the woods in the company of the dogs who seek out this delicacy. Look forward to a tasting, accompanied by local wines. The rare white truffle is only found between September and January  at all other times of year only the black truffle is available. We continue to Canelli, a small village surrounded by vineyards producing the regions famous Muscat grapes. This is the home of spumante, Italys delicious sparkling wine, and we visit one of the underground cantinas to learn the secrets of its production and to enjoy a tasting at the prestigious Contratto Cantina. DAY 4 The Riviera Today is free to explore at leisure. You may like to join our optional excursion to the Italian Riviera, a beautifully rugged coastline boasting lovely beaches and picturesque resorts. We head for the Ligurian coast and the resort of Varazze where youll be able to stroll along the lovely promenade, enjoy a leisurely lunch on the seafront, browse in the charming shops or even take a dip in the Mediterranean. DAY 5 Vineyards Tour Piedmont, which translates as the foot of the mountains, is Italys most north western region and is home to some of the countrys great red wines. We begin our gastronomic exploration with a visit to a selection of the wine producing villages. We visit Serralunga, home to one of the regions finest castles, Le Mura and Monfort, with its beautifully preserved mediaeval centre. A tasting is included in one of the many lovely local vineyards and the afternoon is free before a delicious dinner in a local restaurant.
