Elba is a beautiful island and the perfect base for our relaxing seven-night stay. ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Marciana Marina We fly to Pisa and travel to Piombino to join the ferry for the crossing to Elba. Here we transfer to our hotel just on the edge of the pretty village of Marciana Marina for seven nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Perhaps indulge in an aperitivo at one of the many cafes as you adjust to the slower pace of life here. Pisa Portoferraio is also worth a visit and is easily reached by local bus. Browse in the open-air market and maybe take a drive out to Elbas earliest Roman villa, the Villa Grotte, set in a wonderful location with views across the bay. The towns Civic Museum exhibits archaeological findings from the 8th century BC. Make your way through the Medici Fortress to Napoleons Winter Palace, where the exiled French emperor made plans to conquer Europe once again. To appreciate the beauty of the island from the sea, take a glorious two-hour cruise on The Nautilus, sailing around the sheer cliffs and lovely coves of the northwest coast. The ship is fitted with glass viewing panels, allowing you to discover Elbas underwater life and to see the amazing sight of a 1970 shipwreck. Longer boat trips are also available to other Tuscan islands such as Pianosa, a protected oasis of rare plant, bird and animal life. Elba has the greatest variety of wild flowers of all the Mediterranean islands and is ideal walking country. Take the scenic route across the islands panoramic heights to the south, where you will discover Roman granite quarries, sleepy fishing villages and unspoilt sandy beaches. DAY 8 Marciana Marina/UK We return to Pisa airport for the homeward flight. Fringed by white sandy beaches and with a lush wooded interior, it enjoys a cosmopolitan mix of architecture and culture. You have six days to explore the island and to enjoy the picturesque fishing harbour of Marciana Marina, situated on the north side of the island at the foot of the Capanne Mountains. Perhaps take a swim in the sea or in the hotel pool; savour freshly caught seafood in one of the local restaurants; stroll around the Cotone quarter, the true old town, with its quaint pastel-coloured houses; or take the road from the harbour front up through chestnut woods to the mediaeval village of Marciana, a maze of alleys and cobbled streets that are a real pleasure to explore. Here you can ride the cableway to the summit of Monte Capanne  Elbas highest point  where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view across to the French island of Corsica.
