buildings, splashed with colour from geranium-filled window boxes, and crowned by the famous basilica. This ambitious building, actually two churches on top of each other, is a true celebration of 13th- and 14thcentury art, decorated with renowned frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto. Youll also have some free time to explore Assisi itself. Seek out the Piazza del Commune for a spot of peoplewatching in one of the cafes or enjoy a stroll amongst the quiet back streets, steep narrow alleys and tiny shady squares. DAY 6 Spoleto Spoleto is todays destination, a delightful hilltown perhaps best known for the Ponte delle Tori. This superb mediaeval bridge dramatically and gracefully spans the gorge in ten arches, each over 250 feet high. The town also boasts a Roman theatre, a number of fine museums and San Salvatore, one of the oldest churches in the country, little changed since the 4th or 5th century. DAY 7 Perugia Our exploration of Umbria comes to an end with an excursion to Perugia. Its glorious mediaeval main street, Via Vannucci, is one of the most beautiful in Italy. Many of the towns main sights can be found here, including the cathedral, the graceful Maggiore fountain and the Collegio del Cambio, home to acclaimed frescoes by Perugino. And be sure to take home some of the delicious Perugino chocolates, Bacci, that are made in the town. DAY 8 Trevi/UK Transfer back to Rome airport for the homeward flight.
