This afternoon we reach Yueyang where we visit the local primary school, sponsored by Viking River Cruises. DAY 9 Three Gorges Dam Today we visit the site of the Three Gorges Dam, a 2,300 metre-long and 185metre-high masterwork of human engineering designed to tame the waters of the flood-prone Yangtze. We sail along the Qutang Gorge, perhaps the most spectacular of all with the sheer rock side of Mount Chijia and Mount Baiyan on either side; then leave the ship for a smaller boat to see the Lesser Three Gorges, each with their own distinctive character. After lunch overlooking the gorges we return to the ship to sail through the Wu or Witches Gorge, where pine forests descend to the rivers edge. DAY 11 Shibaozhai Pagoda Sometimes called the Pearl on the Yangtze River, the Shibaozhai Pagoda, built on to a sheer hillside on the banks of the river, is 56 metres and 12 storeys high.
