Namibia 14 days from £2499 The Namib Desert · Etosha National Park · Swakopmund · Sossusvlei · Windhoek One of southern Africa's best-kept secrets, Namibia is a land of amazing contrasts. From the rolling red sand dunes of the Namib Desert to beautiful Atlantic beach resorts and vast open plains with an abundance of wildlife, this epic journey crosses hundreds of miles of outstanding scenery. ITINERARY DAYS 1 & 2 UK/Oropoko Lodge We fly overnight via Johannesburg to Windhoek, where we are met by our Tour Guide for the transfer into the Central Highlands and our excellent lodge for a two-night stay. After settling in this afternoon we enjoy our first game drive in the lodge's private game reserve. Look out for antelope, zebra and giraffe as we cross the plains. This evening's dinner will be a sundowner on the terrace overlooking the African bush savannah. DAY 3 Oropoko Lodge Make the most of a relaxing day and enjoy the facilities of the lodge. In the late afternoon we take another game drive, hoping to spot white Rhino and stopping off to see ancient rock engravings. DAY 4 Okahandja, Lake Otijikoto & Tsumeb We leave Oropoko after breakfast and stop at Okahandja, a town closely linked with Namibia's Herero people. On the outskirts of the town is a bustling market where we can browse through stalls selling wooden carvings, baskets and pots. We continue north stopping to visit the fascinating natural history museum at Tsumeb and Lake Otjikoto, the country's deepest lake. We spend two nights at our lodge a short drive from Tsumeb. DAY 5 Etosha National Park We have an early start this morning as we head for the boundless plains of Etosha, one of Africa's finest game parks, home to 114 species of mammals including the endangered black rhino. Zebra, wildebeest, oryx and springbok all traverse the ancient paths from distant grazing areas to meet elephants wallowing in the water. Lions and leopards wait at the waterholes for the thirsty antelope that will provide their next meal. DAY 6 Damaraland & Vingerklip We cross the plains of Damaraland today, a scenic region of prehistoric watercourses, grasslands and distant mountains, home to wildlife species such as desert elephant and springbok. We travel via Outjo and the Otavi mountains to the Vingerklip, a massive singular sandstone column set in a landscape of haunting beauty. We spend two nights at our lodge with magnificent views over the valley and Damaraland. DAY 7 Kamanjab Today we take an excursion to an area around Kamanjab to see a village supporting the Himba tribe, one of the original people of the Kalahari area. Here you will see how they are living and adapting to modern life while trying to keep their traditions. DAY 8 Twyfelfontein & Swakopmund Leaving Damaraland we head for the Atlantic Coast and make a stop en route at Twyfelfontein to see one of the largest collections of rock engravings in southern Africa. Two sites boasting well-preserved San rock paintings can also be found. We see the nearby geological formations of the `burnt mountain' and `organ pipes' before continuing to the coast and Swakopmund for two nights. This historic town, surrounded by desert and sea, was once under German colonial rule and the restaurants and coffee shops still sell traditional German schnitzel, breads, cakes and excellent beer.
