The huge natural lagoon is home to a vast quantity of Africa's flamingo, and a great variety of wetland birds can be seen here including pelicans, cormorants, sandpipers and grebes. We enjoy a marine cruise to Bird Island and Pelican Point to see the Cape Fur seal colony. If we are lucky we may be accompanied by dolphins. DAY 10 Namib Desert & Sossusvlei Travelling south into the Namib Desert we descend into the Kuiseb Canyon, where the red sands fall into the deep black gorges and the course of the river is marked by a trail of green. We cross the Tropic of Capricorn and encounter hardy desert species. Curious little ground squirrels dash out of their burrows with tails flared and raised above their bodies like an umbrella, while Lappet-faced vultures circle on thermals high in the sky, searching the plains for their prey. We spend two nights in Sossusvlei. DAY 11 Namib Desert Rising 1,000 feet above the plains, the dunes of the Namib reputedly the oldest desert in the world are spectacular. In the late afternoon we head into the dune fields and continue by 4x4 vehicles into the deep sand. We explore stark white pans, dotted with ancient dead Camelthorn trees surrounded by the towering orange dunes; and discover the curious wildlife of the desert, from dancing lizards to head-standing beetles and blind moles. DAY 12 Windhoek We return to the Namibian capital today for our final night and enjoy a city tour. A delightful mix of old and new, historic forts and castles overlook the city, whilst the Tinten Palast, the historic seat of Namibia's government, nestles amongst well-kept gardens. We enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant this evening. DAYS 13 & 14 Windhoek/UK Ater a little free time this morning we transfer to the airport for the overnight flight to London.
