AUCKLAND Mercure Hotel (3-star), 3 nights bed and breakfast. Located just a short walk from the waterfront, the Mercure offers a restaurant, bar and comfortable rooms with TV and minibar. ROTORUA Park Heritage Hotel (4-star), 2 nights bed and breakfast. This comfortable hotel has superb views, a restaurant, lobby bar and an outdoor pool. Rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, minibar and TV. WELLINGTON James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor (3-star) or West Plaza (4-star), 1 night bed and breakfast. Both hotels have restaurant, bar and comfortable guest rooms. CHRISTCHURCH Holiday Inn On Avon (3-star), 2 nights bed and breakfast. This conveniently located hotel has a restaurant, bar and guest rooms with minibar and TV. FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER Franz Josef Hotel (3-star), 1 night bed and breakfast. This welcoming hotel has a bar and restaurant. QUEENSTOWN Mercure Hotel (3-star), 3 nights bed and breakfast. This well-appointed hotel offers a restaurant, bar and comfortable rooms.
Coast, passing the Kaikoura Mountains en route to Christchurch, New Zealand's `Garden City', our base for the next two nights. DAY 12 Christchurch With its manicured parks and gardens, Gothic architecture and meandering River Avon, Christchurch has a distinctly English feel about it. See the highlights on a morning tour, including the craft market at the Arts Centre. DAY 13 Shantytown & Franz Josef Glacier Journey aboard the Tranz-Alpine Express into the Southern Alps and some of New Zealand's most amazing mountain scenery. Leaving the train, we visit Shantytown to try our hand at gold-panning in this reconstruction of an 1880s mining community, then continue by coach to the Franz Josef Glacier, where the optional helicopter flight over the vast sea of ice is highly recommended. We overnight at a hotel near the Franz Josef Glacier. DAY 14 Queenstown We travel through the stunning scenery of Westland National Park, where more than 60 glaciers descend from the snow fields of the Southern Alps, and over the Haast Pass, then down through sheep farming country to Queenstown, where we stay for three nights. DAY 15 Queenstown Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by mountains, enchanting Queenstown cannot fail to impress. This morning, we ride the Skyline Gondola up to Bob's Peak for a dramatic view over the town, lake and the Remarkables Mountains; then step back in time in Arrowtown, a relic of the 19th-century gold rush. DAY 16 Milford Sound Our scenic spectacle continues on today's tour of the exhilarating Fiordland National Park, plus a fantastic luncheon cruise across stunning Milford Sound. The scenery is magical, with mountains rising sheer from the water, sparkling waterfalls, and dominating it all, the landmark Mitre Peak. DAY 17 Fairlie Farmstay Today we travel across the fertile farmlands of Canterbury Plain to the Fairlie or Ashburton region, where we stay tonight in a hospitable farmstead. Enjoy a warm New Zealand welcome from your hosts and sit down to a home-cooked dinner. DAYS 18 & 19 Christchurch/Auckland/UK We return to Christchurch where we have time for last-minute shopping before transferring to the airport for our flight to Auckland, where we connect to our flight home.
