China Highlights 15 days from £1799 The Yangtze River Terracotta Warriors, Xian The Great Wall Shanghai Tea House · A day at leisure in Beijing to further explore · Experience the water town of Suzhou · Travel in luxury along the Yangtze River Enjoy a cruise on the Yangtze River, stroll along the Bund in old Shanghai, and sail through the mist-shrouded towering cliffs and awe-inspiring scenery of the mystical Yangtze Gorges. See the amazing Three Gorges Dam, gaze in awe at the armed warriors of Xian's Terracotta Army, dine on Peking Duck, walk the Great Wall of China and step inside the Forbidden City. ITINERARY DAYS 1 & 2 UK/Shanghai We fly overnight via Frankfurt to Shanghai. After checking into our hotel on Day 2, we start our exploration of this dynamic and exciting city. Visit the Jade Buddha Temple with its two exquisite jade statues and the Yu Yuan Gardens, where the tea house and the famous zigzag bridge afford our first glimpse of old China. DAY 3 Shanghai The mysteries of the Orient, memories of the decadent days of the 1920s and the sky-high reality of one of the fastest-growing cities on the planet make Shanghai an exciting 21st-century destination. Today we'll see the art deco banks and hotels on the waterfront Bund, the Chinese art treasures of the Shanghai Museum, bustling Nanjing Road and, this evening, attend a performance by the amazing Shanghai acrobats. DAY 4 Suzhou We board the train this morning for the journey through rural farmlands and paddy fields to Suzhou, a cultural city renowned for its classical Chinese gardens, traditional houses and humpback bridges arching over willow-tree-lined canals. We enjoy a cruise on the Grand Canal and a visit to a local market before a fascinating tour of the Silk Embroidery Institute, where we can buy brilliantly coloured Chinese silks. DAY 5 Embark MS East King Fly to Yichang today and embark the 5-star luxury of the MS East King, our floating hotel for the next four nights. On board you can attend daily Tai Chi classes, a massage demonstration, calligraphy lecture and enjoy evening entertainment such as folk dancing. DAY 6 Xiling Gorge & Three Gorges Dam Cruise into the mystical Xiling Gorge, immortalised in Chinese legend and literature. Passage through the turbulent waters and boiling rapids was once extremely hazardous and while it has now been made navigable, the rock walls, half-hidden waterfalls and mysterious caves still weave their spell. Visit the Three Gorges Dam, a 2,300-metre-long and 185-metre-high masterwork of engineering, designed to tame the waters of the floodprone Yangtze. The dam is due to be completed in 2009, changing forever the breathtaking character of the gorge ­ another reason to visit now.
