This afternoon sees us sailing through the Wu Gorge, where strange rock formations shrouded in mist top the towering peaks and mountains, and pine forests descend to the river's edge. The third of the gorges, Qutang, is perhaps the most spectacular of all with the sheer rock sides of Mount Chijia and Mount Baiyan hemming the Yangtze. DAY 8 Wanxian This is a unique chance to experience authentic China. Visit a kindergarten in the remote village of Wanxian, go to the lively market to haggle for bargains and see how the locals earn their living. We also visit a resettlement community for people whose work and homes have been relocated as a result of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Enjoy a farewell dinner on board this evening. DAY 9 Xian Disembark in Chongqing and fly to Xian for a two-night stay. DAY 10 Xian & Terracotta Army Xian was the ancient capital of China and grew to prominence as the historic gateway to the legendary Silk Route. Spend the whole day discovering the sights, including the old city walls, the seven-storey Big Wild Goose Pagoda built in 1580, the graceful Bell Tower and the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di, home to the fabulous Terracotta Army. Tonight, a traditional Dumpling Banquet is accompanied by a Tang Dynasty cultural show. DAY 11 Beijing Fly north to the modern-day capital, Beijing, where we enjoy a four-night stay. En route to our hotel visit the Summer Palace, the warm weather retreat of the Empress Dowager Ci Xi, set beside a lake in delightful parklands. It is said that the palace was built with taxes collected for the Imperial Navy and, ironically, she commissioned the building of an extravagant marble boat with some of the funds. Attend a performance of the famous Peking Opera this evening. DAY 12 Ming Tombs & Great Wall Travel out of the city to the Ming Tombs, cut deep into the sides of what was considered an auspicious valley and the last resting place of 13 Ming emperors. Continue to the Great Wall, where we can walk along the top of this mighty rampart constructed between the 14th and 17th centuries. DAY 13 Beijing Discover more of the city today as we visit the 100-acre expanse of Tiananmen Square, the largest public square in the world. Then enter the Forbidden City to explore the courtyards, pavilions, palaces and museums of this vast, extravagant palace, home to Chinese emperors and their enormous retinue of courtiers. We'll also see the Temple of Heaven, a striking wooden monument built in the 15th century. Enjoy a special banquet this evening, featuring Peking Duck.
