ITINERARY
DAYS 1 & 2 UK/Delhi Take the overnight flight to Delhi, arriving on Day 2. Transfer to your hotel for a two-night stay. DAY 3 Delhi Today we discover the many delights of India's capital. To begin with, we step back in time with a tour of Old Delhi. This is the city of the Mughal emperors, dominated by the superb Red Fort on the banks of the Yamana river. The fort comprises marble palaces, a mosque, great halls and wonderful gardens. As we tour the city we experience some of the traditions of Indian life, particularly in the teeming Chandni Chowk bazaar. We will also see Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, and pay a visit to Raj Ghat, the site of Gandhi's cremation. We continue to New Delhi, where the broad avenues and noble buildings of the British Raj contrast with a host of historic treasures. There are many wonderful sights here, as you will discover, such as the impressive Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the president of India, and the imposing India Gate, both designed by Edwin Lutyens. We also see the exquisite tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun and the tapering Qutab Minar tower. Standing almost 240 feet, this splendid sandstone tower bears inscriptions from the Koran and intricate carvings. This evening you will enjoy a special Indian welcome dinner. DAY 4 Agra Leaving the bustle of Delhi behind, we travel to Agra and the Trident Hilton Hotel for an overnight stay. This afternoon we include a visit to the one and only Taj Mahal. This most famous of all India's treasures was built by the Emperor Shah Jehan in honour of his favourite wife. Set in classical gardens with rippling pools, its white marble walls and decoration of semi-precious stones are truly breathtaking a fitting celebration of the emperor's love for his wife. We then pay a visit to the mighty Agra Fort, where Shah Jehan was imprisoned by his son to spend his last days gazing longingly at the Taj Mahal. During our visit we see the fort's Hall of Public Audience and Royal Pavilions. DAY 5 Jaipur This morning join an optional sunrise tour to the Taj Mahal an unforgettable experience. After breakfast we drive to Jaipur, visiting the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri en route. Built in 1568 and abandoned a mere 13 years later, the city is famed for its pink and red stone architecture, pillared pavilions and the wonderful palace of Panch Mahal, whose tiers once bore screens to provide cover for those inside. We continue to our hotel in Jaipur, the `Pink City', for a three-night stay.
