ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Savannah We fly to Atlanta and meet our Tour Guide for the transfer towards the Atlantic coast and Savannah where we spend two nights. DAY 2 Savannah From its origins as Georgia's first town, Savannah epitomises southern charm and beauty in its cobblestone streets and historic squares of fine houses. We'll get into the mood of old Savannah on a charming horse-drawn carriage ride around the delightful parks and along gracious River Street in the Historic Landmark District. The afternoon is free to explore at leisure; perhaps take a stroll around the City Market with its eclectic range of stores and galleries. DAY 3 Charleston After breakfast we cross the border into South Carolina and reach Charleston, our base for the next two nights. Founded in 1670, this enchanting city is home to some of the most beautifully preserved historic architecture in America, as we'll discover on our sightseeing tour. We drive past Georgian stately homes in manicured gardens, narrow streets of Victorian houses, noble churches, the picturesque waterfront and visit the Old Slave Mart Museum, housed in the former slave auction gallery, last used in 1863. DAY 4 Fort Sumter This morning we take a cruise out to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired, and view the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, moored in the harbour. The afternoon is free. DAY 5 Wilmington We head for North Carolina after breakfast and spend one night in the historic port city of Wilmington, standing between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Steeped in centuries of nautical heritage, we discover the tree-lined streets of the painstakingly preserved old quarter, where carriages and vintage trolley cars add to the atmosphere. After our walking tour we cross the river for a fascinating glimpse of the nine decks of the battleship North Carolina, which saw action in World War II. DAY 6 Richmond Continuing north up the Atlantic Coast, we arrive in Richmond, our base for the next two nights. We enjoy a short introductory tour of Richmond. You will see the Virginia State Capital and well-preserved antebellum homes. These provide a suitable backdrop for the historic sites and interesting museums in this charming city.
