jungle. We see the beautiful Agua Azul waterfalls, a natural staircase of blue pools splashing over white limestone ledges. Palenque itself is a fabulous archaeological site, built on an awe-inspiring scale. We stay in Palenque for two nights. DAY 10 Palenque Immerse yourself in the atmospheric ruins of Palenque, where our local guide will explain the history behind the pyramid-like temples and palaces, dating back to AD 500. DAY 11 Campeche Today we travel to Campeche on the tropical Gulf of Mexico for an overnight stay. The town is surrounded by the remains of a high wall, built by the Spanish in the 17th century. DAY 12 Uxmal, Kabah & Merida Leaving Campeche we visit the ruins of Uxmal, a fine example of the architectural style known as Puuc, characterised by rectangular buildings, square columns and elaborately decorated friezes. See the Pyramid of the Magician and the ceremonial Ball Court, then continue to Kabah, an ancient ceremonial centre lined with masks of the rain god, Chac. Our base for the next three nights is the Hotel El Castellano in Merida. DAY 13 Merida A guided carriage tour of this charming city will introduce us to quaint streets of whitewashed colonial buildings, 19th-century mansions, the striking cathedral and the Governor's Palace, decorated with murals of Mayan history. DAY 14 Izamal & Chichen Itza After a visit to Izamal, founded in the 4th century AD, Chichen Itza makes a fitting climax to our Mexican discovery. This is the largest and best preserved of all Mayan cities. Abandoned in 1182, it is renowned for the dominating temple of Kukulcan, a `calendar' pyramid with four stairways, 365 steps one for each day of the year and 18 terraces, the number of months in the Mayan calendar. DAYS 15 & 16 Merida/UK Transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK, arriving the next day.
