Moffen Island Smeerenburg Seven Islands 80 °N nordaustlandet svalbard Ny-Ålesund spitsbergen Longyearbyen Vibebukta barentsøya Kapp Lee edgeoya Diskobukta Spitsbergen Explorer 10 or 11-night voyage opportunity to hike across the tundra and explore the high Arctic desert. As well as reindeer, we'll often encounter ancient whale bones hundreds of metres inland supporting the theory of isostatic rebound', where the earth has sprung back' when released from the weight of glaciation. At sites such as Barentsøya, the bones have been sculpted into things of beauty, cloaked in mosses and lichens and sheltering exquisite wildflowers. Wildlife particularly birds is abundant and we're assured of spotting many species including red-throated divers, Arctic terns, skuas, and a range of ducks, geese and gulls. We'll stand under the spectacular cliff of Fuglesangen, one of the largest bird colonies on the archipelago, which has 200,000 pairs of little auks. There are often tens of thousands of glaucous gulls and kittiwakes concentrated near the ice front of the spectacular Monaco Glacier. Polar bears can be anywhere, so we'll always be on the lookout we may see them on shore, on ice floes or swimming, sometimes kilometers from shore. We'll venture north of 80 degrees to visit Moffen Island, a protected walrus sanctuary where walrus are often seen hauled up on shore and frequently come out to greet the ship. Hornsund has 14 glaciers flowing into the sea, and many seabirds, bearded and ringed seals and bears are often seen here. We may also see beluga whales in the narrow strait by Bourbonhamna, as we make our way back to Longyearbyen.
