High Arctic Canada The Canadian High Arctic is a savage land of rock and ice, which is home to a rich range of bird and animal life. Our visit to Greenland allows us meet the fascinating people of some of the world's most remote communities ExpEdition LEAdER Chris Packham Chris Packham is a television presenter, photographer and author with a passionate concern for conservation and the environment. He has travelled the world in pursuit of all things that slime, sting and scratch but remain close to his heart', and in November of 2005 Chris joined Peregrine Adventures on an expedition voyage to Antarctica. He was so bowled over by this experience he jumped at the opportunity when we invited him to join us on the High Arctic Explorer departing Ottawa on 3 August 2008. This expedition voyage will explore the furthest reaches of the kingdom of the polar bear and promises to be an exceptional wildlife experience. While in the company of Chris Packham we'll go in pursuit of all things that slime, sting, scratch& and bite! At the top of the food chain is Ursus maritimus the polar bear. Alone or with their cubs, these massive predators are often spotted hundreds of kilometres from land. There are also walruses and many species of whale, including the rare horned' narwhal. Kittiwakes, guillemots and puffins are plentiful, our onboard naturalists will also on the look out for less common species like ivory and Ross's gulls. Amid the ice and grandeur, we visit isolated Inuit communities, enjoying their hospitality and arts, and gaining insights into survival and community in these harsh latitudes. The High Arctic has been the testing ground for explorers and adventurers for hundreds of years. During our informal, onboard educational program and our frequent shore excursions, we can trace the tales of their exploits and occasionally their mysterious disappearances.
