Baffin Island Explorer Pond Inlet Clyde River baffin island arctic circle Ban Island Explorer 9-night voyage Cumberland Sound Monumental Island nEW Pangnirtung Iqaluit canada Baffin Island Explorer Journeying across the roof of the world, well see polar bears, walrus and other wildlife, and learn of the history and depth of Inuit culture This is a late-season voyage of discovery, which combines the landings of North and South Baffin Island that we know well, with exploring the lesserknown east coast of central Baffin, Canadas largest island. The dark nights of September also afford us excellent opportunities of seeing the Aurora Borealis the Northern Lights. We start with an historical perspective on the centuries-long quest to find the Northwest Passage at Beechey Island, where we hike to the graves marking the winter camp of the ill-fated 1845 Franklin expedition. Dundas Harbour on Devon Island is magnificently framed by mountains and we may see fox, musk ox and possibly polar bear roaming the tundra. Sailing down Navy Board Inlet, which is bordered on both sides by the beautiful Sermilik National Park, into Eclipse Sound, well keep watch for the elusive and rare narwhal, known to breed in the vicinity. Well drop anchor at Pond Inlet, where well be greeted warmly by the local Inuit community. The northeast coast of Baffin Island is incised with deep fjords with sheer cliffs rising straight up out of the water. Glaciers pouring down ice cliffs into the sea create a dramatic backdrop for ship and Zodiac cruising within these fjords. We continue down the coast of Baffin Island, large parts of which remain uncharted. Well aim for Cape Dyer, Baffins easternmost point and cruise in the Zodiacs or go ashore. Pangnirtung Fjord is renowned for its wild and untamed beauty and its knitted toques (hats)! The backdrop to the town is a spectacular glacial valley, perfect for hiking. Few people have set ashore on Monumental Island, but we may sight seabirds, walrus, whales and polar bears. Finally we sail into historic Frobisher Bay to the capital of the Territory of Nunavut, Iqaluit, where our voyage ends. itinERARY And HiGHLiGHtS day 1 day 2 day 3 day 4 day 5 day 6 day 7 day 8 day 9 day 10 Charter ight ottawa to Resolute, board the ship.
