Beginning in St John's, the colourfully-painted capital of Newfoundland, we trace the coast of the Inuit lands of Labrador north, crossing 60ºN, navigating potential ice floes in Hudson Strait to reach Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island
L'anse aux Meadows on Newfoundland, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America and is referenced in many a Viking legend. From here we cross the Strait of Belle Isle to Battle Harbour and visit remote historic and Inuit settlements along the coast, sailing north to the Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve Canada's newest park. The Reserve includes Canada's highest mountains east of the Rockies, breathtaking fjords and starkly beautiful barrenland'. The Inuit and their predecessors have occupied this region for over 7500 years. Further north, we hike on Akpatok Island and later cruise in the Zodiacs beneath the bird cliffs, which over 500,000 pairs of thick-billed murres call home. Crossing Hudson Strait, we'll be on the lookout for polar bears, with further potential sightings of bears and walrus at Monumental Island, before reaching Iqaluit.
