An epic overland journey across the Kimberley and through Kakadu National Park
We set off on our journey from historic Broome and travel through a spectacular landscape of deep gorges carved into ancient river beds. A fascinating insight into life in remote Australia awaits us when we visit Aboriginal communities, as well as outback sheep and cattle stations. After relaxing at the world-famous El Questro property we explore the amazing Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park. Across the state border in the Northern Territory, we venture out to Nitmiluk National Park, where we enjoy canoeing on the river in beautiful Katherine Gorge. Kakadu National Park is one of Australias most amazing natural wonders. Here, huge saltwater crocodiles lurk in the rivers and abundant birdlife can be spotted among the vegetation. The Indigenous peoples connection to this land is palpable and their history here is phenomenally long. At Ubirr, rock paintings show us scenes of interaction with European settlers as well as depictions from much longer ago. In one rock painting we see a Tasmanian tiger, the last of which vanished from mainland Australia more than 2000 years ago. The final leg of our journey takes us across the floodplains of the mighty South Alligator River and back to Darwin.

day 1 day 2 day 3-4 (Sun) Arrive in Broome. travel via the Aboriginal community of Mowanjum to Windjana Gorge. travel along the gibb river road to Mornington station. explore the wildlife sanctuary. optional canoe or swim in the fitzroy river. travel via Galvins Gorge to Manning creek. Cross the Gibb river and drive via drysdale Station to campsite at King Edward river. Morning rock art viewing. travel to Mitchell Falls for exploration and walks. optional helicopter flights over the Mitchell Plateau. travel back down to Drysdale station. Stay at El Questro wilderness park. A hike up emma Gorge for a swim is one of many local walks on offer. travel to the Bungle Bungle range in purnululu National park. explore Mini palms gorge, Echidna chasm, piccanniny creek and cathedral gorge. optional helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle range. travel to the town of Kununurra. fly from Kununurra to Darwin. transfer to hotel. drive to pine creek and Katherine. Canoeing in Katherine gorge. drive to Kakadu National park and climb to the top of gunlom Falls for views of escarpment. visit Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin gorge) and giants staircase waterfalls. travel to Maguk (Barramundi gorge) on the Arnhem Land escarpment. visit warradjan Aboriginal cultural centre. drive to Jim Jim and Twin Falls for a full day of exploration. sunrise cruise on Yellow water wetlands. See Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr with a view across to Arnhem Land before returning to darwin. trip ends in darwin after breakfast (Sat).
