Eastern China is home to some of the worlds most significant historical and architectural treasures, but few people venture from the main trails to discover the real China. We visit famous sights like the 6000 life-sized Terracotta Warriors in Xian, but its the exotic Muslim Quarter in this city, with its narrow alleyways, colourful spice stalls and antiquated mosques, that provides an insight into lesser-known aspects of China. Time away from the cities allows for a relaxing contrast to the hustle and bustle. Suzhou and Tongli are delightful, with ornate gardens, quaint alleyways and picturesque canals. Yangshuo, a small and charming village near Guilin, is surrounded by hundreds of limestone towers rising sheer from deep green rice fields. Finally, Hong Kong provides an exhilarating last stop to our tour.

An ideal introduction to the famous sights of Beijing, Xian and Shanghai
Beijing is home to one of the most impressive historical sites on earth the Great Wall. In true Peregrine style, we walk along an original section of the wall that is remote and largely unvisited. Highlights of a fascinating exploration of Beijing include the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, all legendary in their own right. Seeking the lesser-known side of China, we explore the exotic Muslim area of Xian, in addition to visiting the Terracotta Warriors. In Shanghai, the bustling markets and fantastic food stalls give us an insight into the local lifestyle, while a walk along the Bund, on the waterfront, provides brilliant photo opportunities of historic Art Deco buildings on the east side as well as amazing futuristic towers across the river, at Pudong.
