The remote trail to distant Salcantay leads us through stunning mountain scenery to our highest point at 4950 metres, before continuing on to join the busier and more traditional Classic Inca Trail. Glimpsing Machu Picchu for the first time through the Inca Sun Gate is a truly overwhelming experience. Returning to Cusco we continue on to Lake Titicaca, where our island home-stay with an Indian family offers a rich cultural encounter. Following the shores of Lake Titicaca we cross the Bolivian frontier and visit the ancient ruins of Tiahuanaco before arriving in the capital of La Paz where we conclude our cross-country adventure. This intriguing civilisation carved the Nazca Lines  huge geometric patterns and spirals, perfectly straight lines, and animal figures, that stretch into the desert. Driving into the Andes we come to the beautiful city of Arequipa, home to the 16th-century Santa Catalina Convent. Close to the city is the spectacular Colca Canyon, the deepest canyon on earth. Next stop is Cusco with its magnificent Inca sites, whilst out in the Urubamba Valley, colourful local markets and imposing Inca fortresses await. To cap off our journey we hike along ancient Inca pathways, over high mountain passes and down steep winding steps to arrive at the Sun Gate and the spectacular ruins of Machu Picchu. Overnight coach to Arequipa. Walking tour of Arequipa colonial centre. Overnight visit to Colca Canyon. Return to Arequipa. Morning flight to Cusco. Walking tour of Cusco and full-day excursion to the Sacred Valley including Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Hike the Inca Trail reaching a height of 4200 metres. Reach Machu Picchu for sunrise, explore the ruins and Aguas Calientes. Train to Cusco. Free day in Cusco with time for optional activities. Fly back to Lima where trip ends on arrival (Mon).
