Travelling We believe that our adventure holidays should respect and benefit local people and the environment in the countries we visit. Whether its the Arctic, Africa or Antarctica, we aim to minimise our impact on the environment and maximise respectful interaction with the local people. For Peregrine travellers, its about being culturally and environmentally sensitive in a way that gives you a deeper understanding of a place and its people and guarantees youll have a meaningful and rewarding adventure. lOCAl lEADERS AND STAFF All our adventures are led by highly qualified local leaders and have been for eight years now. Our team consists of more than 230 men and women who are passionate about their countrys history, heritage and natural beauty. They can help you to get under the skin and off the beaten track of their country, and see it through the eyes of a local. lOCAl SUPPlIERS We choose to work with locally owned businesses in the countries we visit. Some of these relationships such as in Nepal extend back to the founding of Peregrine 30 years ago and have become firm friendships. responsibly SMAll GROUPS Travelling in small groups ensures we make significantly less impact on the natural environment, as well as breaking down many of the communication barriers presented by a larger group. SUPPORTING THE lOCAl ECONOMY Many years ago Peregrine made the choice to support the countries that we visit in one of the simplest ways possible by employing our tour leaders from each country. This means that employment and revenue stays in the local community. The effort has been truly rewarding not only are we supporting the communities that we visit, we now have a fantastic team of people with amazing expertise on their homeland. We also actively avoid international chain hotels, preferring to give our patronage to owner-managed establishments, which offer quality and character and where our business directly benefits the local people. OUR COMMITMENT AROUND THE GlOBE When you travel with Peregrine, you are not just joining an adventure you are making a positive contribution to the welfare of communities and wildlife around the globe. We support many local charities, organisations and businesses that have a social, economic or environmental cause. For example, in Nepal, we support the International Porter Protection Group, a body formed to protect porters from mistreatment, and in Peru we support Perus Challenge, an organisation that works to improve the lives of underprivileged children. Find out about the many causes we support at www.peregrineadventures.co.uk/rt GIVING SOMETHING BACK In short, we care about the places and the people we meet on our journeys... and we try to ensure that we give something back, as well as taking away so many incredible memories. PlAN PEREGRINE INTERNATIONAl PARTNERSHIP Peregrine is a financial sponsor of selected Plan projects in some of our travel destinations. The partnership is built on a joint philosophy of promoting local employment. Ninety-seven percent of Plans staff in program countries are local people, and at Peregrine we are proud to be able to match this philosophy with our employment of local tour leaders, guides and support staff. Please refer to www.peregrineadventures.co.uk/plan for further information on our partnership with Plan, and to learn more about Plans work with children and their communities overseas. Join us in making a positive contribution around the globe Some of our community projects around the world SNOW lEOPARD CONSERVATION Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust (SLC-India) is a registered charity that supports conservation in the mountainous areas of India, with a particular emphasis on protecting the endangered snow leopard, its prey and habitat. SLC-India takes a community-based approach and facilitates conservation measures like predator-proofing of livestock pens, as well as projects incorporating eco-tourism, environmental education, research and monitoring. Our Tracking the Snow Leopard adventure provides alternative income for the local people who live in snow leopard habitat areas, and raises awareness of snow leopard conservation locally and internationally. The trip includes a conservation contribution to Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust. JANE GOODAll INSTITUTE Jane Goodalls name is synonymous with chimpanzee conservation in Africa. The Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation (JGI) has led efforts to protect chimpanzees and their habitats by establishing community-based programs in Africa, as well as the Roots & Shoots education program, which operates in over 70 countries. We visit JGI on our Wildlife Behind the Scenes adventure and on our Preserving Primates trip we spend time with JGI researchers as they work in Uganda. Your participation in these safaris secures a financial contribution for the JGI. PORTER PROTECTION We are a member of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) a body formed to protect porters from mistreatment by unprofessional trekking operators or private trekkers. In addition, we are raising funds from our Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes trek to help support the porter shelter in Machhermo in the Gokyo Valley. While all our trips adhere to the principles of Responsible Travel some also include visits to community projects. Look out for this symbol throughout this brochure for trips that visit these, or other Responsible Travel initiatives.
