Day 3
The Altai is the highest of three major mountain ranges in Mongolia and straddles the Russian and Chinese frontiers in the west. This region of snow-capped mountains and glaciers is home to many ethnic minority nomads such as the Kazakhs, who are Muslim and speak an ancient Kazakh language, and the Tuvans, who are Buddhist and shamanistic. On this dramatic journey we will trek to the Potanina glacier before continuing across the high Altai range and into the lakes region, close to the Chinese border. Supported by pack camels and local guides we explore a region so remote that only a handful of travellers visit each year. Here we will experience a lifestyle untouched in centuries, a near-mythic land where proud hunters train golden eagles and snow leopards stalk unseen nearby.

Day 3 Day 4-5
Day 6-7
Day 8-9 Day 10-11 Day 12-13
Day 14 Day 15
The true spirit of Mongolia is to be found in its countryside. Mongolian tradition eschews land ownership, thus it is known as the land without fences. The vast, starkly beautiful scenery stretches endlessly to the horizon and most nights we stay in gers local-style white felt tents to appreciate the remarkable solitude. Our journey takes us via wide rivers and tranquil lakes, singing deserts and endless steppes. We travel south to the deserts of the Gobi and visit several conservation centres to learn about current environmental work. Mongolia's hardy locals, who are affectionately dubbed Asia's cowboys in this, its Wild West', spend most of their time tending to vast herds of animals, but they are also incredibly hospitable and happy to invite visitors into their homes to experience some of their customs and culture. A sojourn in this fascinating and rarely-visited country is an extraordinary experience.
