Monasteries & Castles of Medieval Abruzzo 8 Days Be enchanted by the magnificent churches, castles and landscapes of Italys remote, mountainous region of Abruzzo
Although very close to rome, the Abruzzo region features wilderness where wolves may still be found and hillsides speckled with crumbling castles. We visit beautiful nature reserves including Gran Sasso National Park, which is home to the highest peak in the Apennines, Maiella National Park, dotted with remote medieval monasteries, and Abruzzo National Park, one of the oldest protected landscapes in Italy. We embark on some wonderful walks on quiet trails and are rewarding with spectacular views. We also focus on the cultural treasures of the region by walking to hilltop medieval villages and hidden monasteries with sandstone walls adorned by beautiful frescos. Our journey ends in wonderful Sulmona, birthplace of the roman poet, Ovid, and home to an array of well preserved ruins from the days of the Emperors. An inspiring journey through a rustic region only now opening its doors to the modern day.
iTiNerarY aNd HiGHliGHTS
day 1 day 2 day 3 day 4 (sun) arrive in historic city of LAquila. Walking in Gran Sasso National Park. Cablecar to top of Campo Imperatore. visit village of Santo Stefano (5 hours). visit once-abandoned village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. spectacular walk to Roccacalascio and medieval Calascio (5 hours). Maiella National Park. visit Santo Spirito and St Bartholomew Monasteries. stroll through pretty Orfento River valley to Caramanico Terme (4 hours). Walk into canyon of orfento River through waterfalls and grottos. Tour of Caramanico (4 hours). drive to Rocca Caramanico. Walk to medieval village of Pacentro then on to Sulmona (5.5 hours). Travel to Anversa degli Abruzzo and Castrovalva. Walk above Sagittario River to Castrovalva, Frattura Vecchia and scanno. Return to Sulmona (4 hours). Trip ends in sulmona this morning (sun).

We begin our journey in the charming resort town of Taormina, which boasts one of the most beautifully located Greek theatres in the world. We explore the town and its surrounds on foot and then travel inland to explore the Alcantara valley and Mount Etna, Europes largest active volcano. Our journey then takes us to the southern part of the island, where we see remnants of the different civilisations that have chosen Sicily as their base. In the Anapo Valley, we take a beautiful exploratory walk past prehistoric caves, Byzantine churches and Baroque buildings, before travelling on to Syracuse, once the most powerful Greek city in the world! We explore this intriguing town and also visit some of the other charming towns of the southeast. Of course, time will be dedicated to the most famous wine in the area Nero d Avola. This journey showcases the cultural highlights and incredible natural wonders of this delightful Mediterranean island!

Travel to Alcantara canyon and explore on foot. Walk to village of Francavilla (4 hours). Full day visit to Mount Etna. Travel to Linguaglossa then along the Mareneve road to view recent lavaflows (4 hours). Travel to Necropolis of Pantalica, a prehistoric burial site. Walk through River Anapo valley and see small chapels and Byzantine churches (5 hours). Travel to beautiful baroque city of Noto. Explore ruins; sample local wine. afternoon free to explore Syracuse. Trip ends in syracuse after breakfast (sat).
