We visit beautiful nature reserves including Gran Sasso National Park, which is home to the highest peak in the Apennines, Maiella National Park, dotted with remote medieval monasteries, and Abruzzo National Park, one of the oldest protected landscapes in Italy. We embark on some wonderful walks on quiet trails and are rewarding with spectacular views. We also focus on the cultural treasures of the region by walking to hilltop medieval villages and hidden monasteries with sandstone walls adorned by beautiful frescos. Our journey ends in wonderful Sulmona, birthplace of the roman poet, Ovid, and home to an array of well preserved ruins from the days of the Emperors. Maiella National Park. visit Santo Spirito and St Bartholomew Monasteries. stroll through pretty Orfento River valley to Caramanico Terme (4 hours). Walk into canyon of orfento River through waterfalls and grottos. Tour of Caramanico (4 hours). drive to Rocca Caramanico. Walk to medieval village of Pacentro then on to Sulmona (5.5 hours). Our journey then takes us to the southern part of the island, where we see remnants of the different civilisations that have chosen Sicily as their base.
