FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What sort of people go on your trips? Our archaeological tours are very much self selecting. Our guests are usually well travelled, enthusiastic, and curious about exploring new countries and cultures. They come from an incredibly wide range of professional backgrounds. Some have never been on an escorted tour before, others have been on cultural tours all around the world. About 40% of our guests come from the UK, 40% from the US and Canada, with the remaining 20% split between Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and beyond. On average about a quarter of the people on our trips are single travellers. How old are your customers? Our trips appeal to quite a wide age range. Generally speaking, most are in the 35-70 age bracket. Our family tours have attracted parents with children aged between 8-15. We have mums and dads bringing their grown up children along in their 20's or 30's, and we are finding more and more people in their 30's those who want to explore and learn whilst having a relaxing time in a beautiful place. Our oldest client so far celebrated his 83rd birthday with us, and as is often the way, he was usually the first to the top of the ancient sites we visited. Do people get sea sick on a gulet trip? The non-tidal Mediterranean, is a very different proposition to the great seas and oceans, but of course the weather can blow up at times. The gulets we use are all broad and beamy so they offer a very comfortable ride. We watch the weather very closely and try to avoid any rough seas, taking shelter in the numerous coves and bays along the coast. In the 11 years Peter has been leading gulet trips only a handful of people have been sea sick, and then only once during their trip. Some guests take precautions: travel sickness pills, acupressure wrist bands, medical patches, and we've had a number of ladies who insist that brandy helps! Most people tell us that being on deck in the sunny fresh air gazing at the ever changing horizon is more than enough to ward off any feelings of mal de mer. How do people get to the gulet, or the first hotel, at the start of a trip? We meet guests at the local airport closest to the starting point of a tour, and then escort them to the local airport closest to the ending point of a holiday. These airport transfers are included in our tour prices. How do we know when to arrive and depart and what flights to take? After a customer makes a booking we recommend suitable arrival and departure times, and suggest the most convenient flights. We don't sell flights ourselves, but we do work with accredited flight specialists both in the UK, the US, and in Turkey, who can arrange flights for you if you would like. Of course you can book flights yourselves if you prefer. Occasionally there are charter flights from the UK that fit our tour schedule, but most operate at unsociable hours, and so we don't recommend them. We normally suggest using Turkish Airlines' scheduled flights, which involve a change in Istanbul. Do I need to pay a single supplement, if I am willing to share a cabin? Invariably our single customers splash out and book a cabin for themselves, but if you have a travelling companion you are willing to share with, or there is another single traveller booked on a trip who is willing to share a twin cabin, we won't charge you a supplement. 36 For a more detailed list of FAQ's visit our website - www.petersommer.com
