This Spanish isle plays things differently to its bigger Balearic sisters, Majorca and Ibiza. It's less hip and it's definitely less happening. But that's precisely its appeal. Sure, the island's got its fair share of tourist spots but they're not big or brash. Instead, think low-rise resorts with cute marinas and seafood restaurants. Lanes filled with street markets and sleepy shops. And harbours bobbing with fishing boats. Of course, in the bigger resorts, like Cala'n Forcat and Son Bou, you'll find plenty in the way of nightlife but they're still pretty much focussed on lazy days on the sands. And it's easy to see why - Menorca's beaches are gorgeous. Every one of them. We're talking soft golden sweeps perfect for kids' construction work. Pine-shaded bays melting into bright blue shallows. And off-the-beaten-track coves backed by cliffs. Sun lotion aside, let's not forget Menorca's other big draws. Behind the beaches, the island's hills are sprinkled with dry-stone walls and gentle walking trails. Further inland there are tiny villages where everything seems to stop at siesta time apart from the beating of the sun's rays. And dotted all over the island are prehistoric stone towers and temples that give Stonehenge a run for its masonry. Rounding things off you've got Menorca's tale of two cities - Mahon and Ciudadela, historical showstoppers the pair of them. If ever you needed proof the best things come in small packages, Menorca's quite simply it. Cala Galdana Location 27km of coastline stretching west from Mahon Transfer Time 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes If you like your beaches with a bit of life, then Cala Galdana is your kind of place. One of Menorca's most exquisite bays, there's a happening, gentle atmosphere. The beach is a knockout, with silvery sands, shallow seas and heart-lifting views. Further along the shoreline are several other stunning beaches. And don't expect frenzied nighttime partying. Evenings here are about good food and wine at the resort's restaurants. And should want a quicker pace, the bright lights of Son Bou beckon from down the coast. Santo Tomas Location Approx 27km west of Mahon Transfer Time 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes At this small, seaside village you can saunter down past the protected sand dunes to the long strip of inviting white sand. With a sprinkling of charming restaurants and two small shopping centres, it's got everything for a truly tranquil getaway. Highlights Aqua Rock If you like it wet and wild then join in the fun at Aqua Rock! Put on your swimwear and come along for loads of action-packed adventure on some of the best waterslides on the island. If you prefer your fun fast or slow, then the choice is yours: pump up the adrenaline on the waterslides or, for a more sedate pleasure, enjoy the fabulous cool waters. A great chance for all ages to have some fun! S'Algar Location 27km of coastline stretching west from Mahon Transfer Time 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes Although this place is secluded, it's not cut off from the outside world. You'll find a few large hotels, attractive apartments and villas, shops selling essentials and souvenirs and a small, sandy beach for those that like to do nothing more than flop under the sun. Mahon Market & Modas No visit to Menorca would be complete without a visit to the island's capital Mahon. Stroll through the quaint streets and soak up the atmosphere of this pleasant harbour town. The excursion also includes a visit to watch a special leather fashion show at the Modas saloon, situated next to Menorca's largest indoor commercial centre specialising in shoes, handbags, belts, costume jewellery and more. After a great morning shopping, your coach will whisk you back to resort in time to catch the late afternoon sun. Arenal d'en Castell Location About 20km from Mahon Transfer Time 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes The beaches at Arenal d'en Castell have to be some of the best in Menorca. Edging the sands is a row of cafes and bars, and behind the beach, the attractive modern resort clambers up the rolling hillside, home to souvenir shops and a range of eateries. Cala'n Forcat Location On the west coast, 50km from Mahon Transfer Time 45 minutes-1 hour Cala'n Forcat is a lively, modern resort which comes alive after dark at local bars and discos, providing a fun atmosphere and attracting young families and couples. By day, why not snorkel around the rocks or simply relax on the small sandy beach? Dancing Horses A spectacular equestrian show starring the famous fiesta horses, which the whole family will enjoy. The show highlights the incredible display of dressage and many wonderful skills involved in this art, including an astonishing final carousel! 62 Visit portlandholidays.co.uk * Exclusive online discounts
