But there's more to Tenerife than just beaches and bars including one showstopper of a volcano. 30 80 70 60 50 40 25 20 15 10 5 London Tenerife °F Apr 8 5 May Jun Jul Aug Sep Average daily hours of sunshine 9 10 11 11 9 6 7 6 6 5 Oct 7 3 °C As a holiday destination, Tenerife's etched into our collective subconscious. And for good reason. With its year-round sunshine, good selection of beaches and sizzling nightlife, it knows how to throw a great getaway. Most people head to the south of the island where you'll find the ever-popular resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Think neon-lit strips, loads of British bars and golden sands imported from the Sahara. But that's only the half of it. There's another side to the island, literally and metaphorically. Away from the south coast, you'll find a wonderland of banana plantations, pine forests and volcanic landscapes. And set right at the heart is the towering peak of Mount Teide, a volcano that also happens to be the highest mountain in Spain. The north of the island offers up resorts with more of a Spanish twist. Places like Puerto de la Cruz that mixes up modern hotels with colonial squares. And even though it's the daddy of the Canaries size-wise, Tenerife's really easy to get around. Head up to the history-fest that is Guimar. Treat the kids to a day at Loro Parque or Aqualand. And check out the seriously good shopping scene down in Santa Cruz. With all this on offer, it's no wonder Tenerife trips off the tongue when the annual holiday debate rolls round. Costa Adeje Location 30km south of Los Gigantes Transfer Time 35 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes If chilling out in peaceful surroundings sounds like your kind of holiday, Costa Adeje hits the nail right on the head. Forget high-rises and neon strips, Costa Adeje is life on the quiet side. Newly built, up-market and oozing tranquillity, this charming town spreads out from the sands of the famous El Duque Beach. Sprinkled with exclusive shops, chic restaurants and luxurious 5-star hotels, this destination really knows how to spoil its guests. End a perfect day relaxing at a beachfront table with a bottle of wine. Bliss. Visit portlandholidays.co.uk Playa de las Americas Location 30km south of Los Gigantes Transfer Time 35 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes Playa de las Americas, 17.5km south of Reina Sofia airport, is a modern playground with an international atmosphere - perfect for families as well as young couples and groups of friends. The beaches are popular, watersports are brilliant and there's a waterpark (and the buses to it are free!). There is an 18 hole golf course with views towards the resort centre and the sea, an ideal location made even more attractive for a round of golf as it is protected from the wind by a nearby mountain range. Los Cristianos Location 3km southeast of Playa de las Americas Transfer Time 25 to 45 minutes Los Cristianos is a sophisticated resort, with a gently shelving sweep of dark sand around a sheltered bay. Nightlife here is relaxed - the bars and restaurants are more suited to couples than those after a merry night on the town. Highlights Mount Teide Mount Teide is Tenerife's most famous landmark. As you make your way up the mountain the panoramic views are ever changing, and it is certainly recommended that you bring a camera. You will also notice that the climate changes through 4 distinct temperate zones, showing off Tenerife's flora and fauna in its colourful entirety. A cable car to 12,000 ft is available, weather permitting, and it's here that the vistas of Tenerife and the rest of the Canary Islands greet you. As our Mount Teide excursion departs in the morning, there are fewer queues for the cable car, ensuring that you are back around lunchtime. N.B. Cable car not available on combination tours. Loro Parque Award of Excellence. The winner of numerous international awards, Loro Parque houses some of the most fantastic animals. The latest additions are four killer whales, making this one of only two places in Europe where you can see these creatures. There are breathtaking dolphin, sealion and parrot shows while Planet Penguin - the world's largest penguinarium - is a wonderful experience. You have the option of a Thomson Premium ticket which includes a guided behind the scenes tour of the park, taking in such places as the gorillas' sleeping area, the snow machines in Planet Penguin and the dolphin enclosure. Also included is lunch in one of the restaurants. Playa Paraiso Location 15km south of Los Gigantes Transfer Time 45 minutes to 1 hour Modern and mellow, Playa Paraiso gives you that miles from the madding crowd feeling. But because it's just to the north of Playa de las Americas, you get the best of both worlds - laid-back and lovely or light-hearted and lively: the choice is yours. Los Gigantes Location 30km north of Playa de las Americas Transfer Time About 1 hour 35 minutes Love picturesque towns? Hanker after the quiet life on holiday? Then partner up with Los Gigantes for a match made in heaven. This tranquil town will sweep you off your flip-flops with its charming, village-like ambience and glittering black sand beach. Puerto de la Cruz Location 35km west of Santa Cruz Transfer Time 1 hour 45 minutes The old town of Puerto de la Cruz, centred around the small fishing port, remains remarkably unchanged, creating a charming atmosphere. The rocky coast with its three small black sand beaches is also the home of the newly refurbished Lido Martinez.
