How active?
Your level of activity is up to you on this holiday. We include a two-day white-water rafting trip but this can easily be excluded. The rafting is an exhilarating ride on a river which races through jungle on its way to the Caribbean. In Arenal, you can walk, ride horses or simply soak in hot springs and watch the active volcano. Similarly, in Monteverde, zoom from tree to tree on zip lines through the cloudforest canopy, or walk the suspended walkways to see the wildlife. The decision is yours get active, or just relax and take in your surroundings. At the beach you can still be active if you like with a wide range of excursions on offer.

A perfect mix of independent and guided exploration. Combine wildlife viewing, varied activities and relaxation on a beach. · Day 1 Transfer from the airport in San Jose to a nearby boutique hotel. · Day 2 Relax, swim in one of the pools or walk around the tropical gardens. · Day 3 Raft the Pacuare River to a pretty riverside camp in the jungle. · Day 4 Continue rafting towards the Caribbean coast to finish by lunch time. · Day 5 Travel by road and river into the wetlands of Tortuguero. · Day 6 Explore by boat, canoe, bike or on foot to see turtles, monkeys and alligators. · Day 7 Leave the park by boat then drive yourself to Arenal. · Day 8 Relax in hot springs, stroll through tropical grounds or swim in the pool. · Day 9 Drive around Lake Arenal to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve. · Day 10 Spend today in the canopy, rich with birds, butterflies and orchids. · Day 11 Drive down to a laid back village on the Pacific coast. · Day 12 Relax, swim, surf or walk. · Day 13 Day at leisure to enjoy the beach. · Day 14 Another day to relax on the beach. · Day 15 Travel home, or extend your holiday with time in the stunning Corcovado area.
How comfortable?
We generally use first class and luxury boutique hotels, although we can tailor the holiday to meet your needs. While rafting, you spend a night in a permanent jungle riverside camp. Tents are on raised platforms with proper camp beds so it is very civilised. Other hotels and lodges are usually small and family-run except in Arenal where we use a larger hotel with its own hot springs. This holiday begins with guided time on the Pacuare River and in the Tortuguero wetlands. On day seven, when you are familiar with your environment, you pick up your car. From here on in you are free to explore at your own pace using the maps and detailed local information that we provide for you.
