How active?
There is some high altitude walking in the Atacama, but working your way up is gradual, with time to acclimatise. Activities are `return to base' so you can take rest days if you wish. In Patagonia, you will walk a four-day trail across Torres del Paine, which is a moderate walking route, carrying daypacks. Summer days are long allowing a relaxed pace of about five hours' walking a day. The Inca Trail is high altitude and the going can be tough, so you must be used to hill walking. In total you walk around 28 miles over four days at altitudes of up to 4,200m.
How comfortable?
Stay in first class small hotels with twin/double en suite rooms throughout, except for four nights in Patagonia's refugios and three nights camping (with dining and toilet tents) on the Inca Trail. Refugios are communal wooden lodges with four or six bunks - nothing fancy but the meals are hot and the wine passable. Your luggage is portaged in Torres del Paine and the Inca Trail, so the walk is relaxed and comfortable. In Chile you will be part of a small guided group, 12 maximum. For the Inca Trail, your Pura group will have a maximum of 16, though usually about eight.
