brief itinerary Chile & ARGENTINA Cross the Andes This is a true wilderness journey for the experienced rider. Join a small group for a spectacular ride across the Andes, from the wide plains of the Argentine steppe to the rugged landscape of the Chilean Lake District. Ride through grasslands in the shadow of volcanoes past high glacial lakes into ancient larch forests. In the evening, eat by an open fire and sleep under the stars. How active? This trip is for experienced riders who are fit enough to canter for extended periods and spend long hours in the saddle - and who adhere to the 90kg weight limit. Horses are neck-reined and riding style is western, with `montura de monte' saddles (basically an old English army saddle with a sheepskin on top). Expect five to eight hours' riding a day over consecutive days. Riding in Argentina is on criollo cross horses, part anglonormand. These are around 16hh and all are bred and trained on the estancia. In Chile you ride criollo and criollo-arab crosses of around 15hh. Horses are well trained and sure-footed.
