Estancia Ride
Ride world-class horses and enjoy the comfort of luxurious accommodation on this exclusive small group holiday. Ride beautiful criollo cross horses across the Argentine steppe in the shadow of the Andes and get to know the life and culture of the gauchos as they lead you through their cattle ranches. Enjoy the luxury and warm hospitality of Patagonian family-run estancias. How active?
This trip is suitable for good riders who are fit enough to canter for extended periods. Expect to ride for between three and seven hours over several consecutive days. Horses are criollo crosses, part anglonormand, around 16hh. All are bred and trained on the estancia. There are 60 horses so there is plenty of choice to make sure you get the right one for you. They are all sure-footed and well behaved. Horses are neck reined. Riding style is western and saddles are `montura de monte' which is essentially an old English army saddle topped with a sheepskin.

How comfortable?
Stay in very comfortable, exclusive estancias in twin or double en suite rooms, and for one night in a pleasant hotel in a small town. Every other day you ride round an estancia and return to the same lodge in the evening, which allows you rest days if you wish. Rides start in the relative cool of the morning with a long break for lunch, before arriving at your destination in the late afternoon. Lunches can be lavish affairs: spit roast lamb cooked over an open fire and fine wine followed by a siesta in the shade curled up on your sheepskin.

Not quite right?
It's well worth extending this holiday with some time in Buenos Aires. You might also like to add a visit to Antarctica (p22). For a more challenging ride, try our Cross the Andes holiday (p16) or for a slightly longer ride in Chile, see our Patagonia Mountain Ride (p18).
