Andes to Amazon
Embark on one of South America's great adventures as you hike, bike and raft from the high Andes down into the Amazon jungle. Walk the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, bike to the edge of the Andes and experience sunrise over the Amazon basin. Ride downhill all the way from the high Andes to the Amazon jungle through shifting ecosystems and cultures. Explore the remote rainforest lowlands of the Manu Reserve. How active?
There is plenty of variety during this holiday, from hiking and mountain biking to white water rafting. There is some high altitude walking and steep steps, but overall the pace is relaxed and the trip is fully portaged. In total you walk around 28 miles over the four days at altitudes of up to 4,200m, with time for rest and acclimatisation. Mountain biking is mostly flat or downhill, and for any uphill sections you can ride or take the support vehicle. Road surfaces can be rough. You do not need to be a bike or rafting expert, but the trip is challenging and we advise a healthy sense of adventure.

In Cusco you stay in a colonial style, first-class hotel near the main square. The Inca Trail is fully portaged and serviced, and by taking a little more time over the walk, we avoid the busy campsites. Porters prepare all of your meals and set up camp for you, and we provide dining and toilet tents to make the experience as civilised as possible. The cloudforest and rainforest lodges we use are very remote and are therefore comfortable rather than luxurious. They are ideally located for wildlife watching, and indeed some are research centres. Groups are of 10 people maximum, plus your guide.

Not quite right?
Still in Peru, look at our Peru Uncovered (p30) or Essential Peru (p32) holidays for relaxed walking and cultural exploration of the country. Alternatively, in Chile to the south, our Patagonia's Pirenwinkul holiday (p6) is a relatively luxurious adventure through beautiful southern Chile.
This holiday is exclusive to us. Our Inca Trail hike is a day longer than others and so the conditions are quieter and the walking unhurried. The ride into the Amazon through distinct climatic zones is a unique way of seeing less visited parts of Peru. All lodges adhere to environmental and sustainability codes. We support Dental Project Peru.
