his classic artists landscape, with its flat, fertile and open lands, long canals, windmills, historic towns and villages is best explored by bicycle and barge. This southern route takes us into the heart of the Netherlands as well as spending time near the coast. Our relaxed cycling takes us along rivers one day, the next being spent roaming the centre of 16th Century towns like Delft, Leiden and Haarlem. We pass the eighteen windmills in Kinderdijk, built around 1750. We discover the world's largest seaport, Rotterdam, by boat and travel onto the beach of Scheveningen near The Hague. There's even some time for exploring the museums, shopping and cafés in Amsterdam.

Windmills, Polders & Golden Beaches
ravelling north from Amsterdam we cycle across land reclaimed from the sea during the 17th century using hundreds of windmills, many of which are still in working order. We journey over small dykes, along country roads, through vast polders and the most beautiful dunes in the Netherlands from Bergen to Schoorl. We cycle onto Alkmaar, the capital of Dutch cheese with its own cheese market. You will be able to see cheese being made by hand and witness, first hand how those typical Dutch shoes, clogs', are carved out of one piece of wood. Crossing to the island of Texel we cycle in the magnificent nature reserve before moving onto Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Edam and Volendam, important ports during the Golden Age' of Dutch history.
