Spain Jerez Costa de la Luz Tarifa Gibraltar Malaga Spain - Sierras de Cadiz T his wonderful self-guided road tour takes you through the most stunning mountain scenery in western Andalucia. Quiet roads and backlanes will lead you past limestone peaks and cork-oak clad sierras, linking Pueblos Blancos (white villages). This rural corner of Andalucia is worlds apart from the busy costas of the Mediterranean, immersed in its history and proud of their traditions, you will see the campesinos working the land and herding livestock to produce exquisite cheeses and cured meats, succulent fruits, olives to press and grapes to turn into sherries and wines. Meandering through four beautiful and very diverse mountainous areas, your two wheels will carry you at your own pace. Luggage will be transferred to your accommodation , leaving you free to enjoy the tour just carrying snacks and spares as though out on a days ride. Starting out from the hilltop white village of Alcala de los Gazules, only a short drive from Jerez airport, the route heads straight into Los Alcornacales natural park, one of the largest cork oak forests in the world, with rolling hills as far as the eye can see. The road climbs past the peak of Picacho before a long sweeping descent down the lush Hozgarganta river valley and the village of Jimena de la Frontera, crowned by its impressive castle. The next day there will be a chance for a worthwhile visit to the 25,000 year old cave paintings of the Pileta cave before heading out into the Serrania de Ronda, contouring through chestnuts, towered over by the serene Karstic crags of the Sierra de las Nieves. A shorter ride into Ronda allows time for you to explore the beautifully preserved old town and majestic Tajo gorge. The next few days will be spent marvelling at the beauty of the Grazalema Natural park. An awesome final descent of over a 1000 metres out of the park will take you to your final destination of Arcos de la Frontera. This is a week of leisurely paced cycle touring through exquisite countryside and mountainscapes, Moorish history, fantastic food & lashings of Andaluz character.
