Roman Roads & Coastal Castles
A truly inspiring trip - not to be missed! Northumberland has an amazing historical heritage Neoliithic tribes, the first Christians and then the Normans, all left their mark. Two thousand years ago, Northumberland was one of the Roman Empire's greatest outposts. Our cycle route begins at Hadrian's Wall (a world heritage site), named after the Roman Emperor (guess which one!) in AD122 to mark the boundary of the Roman Empire. After views of Roman forts, we ride through pine forests and moorland into the dramatic valleys below the Cheviot Hills, passing through the market town of Wooler and the Elizabethan walled town of Berwick-uponTweed. For the final two days of the trip, you turn southwards, onto the North Sea Cycle Route and cycle along the edge of dramatic cliffs and expansive beaches passing the Norman castles of Bamburgh, Lindisfarne and Dunstanburgh.
Coasts & Castles
A unique cycling short break along the stunning Northumberland coastline, utilising a beautiful part of the North Sea Cycle Route. We begin at the quaint fishing harbour of Alnmouth, the route travels northwards alongside the wide sandy beaches of Embleton, Newton and Bamburgh and depending on the tides you can cross the causeway to Lindisfarne (Holy Island). There are amazing views of the impressive castles of 12th Century Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh, and Lindisfarne. Our route continues up near the Scottish border to the Elizabethan walled town of Berwick-uponTweed, from where you can catch the train home or meet our support vehicle to whisk you back to Alnmouth.
