Cap Corse Like a finger pointing northwards, the mountainous Cap Corse overflows with sleepy villages squeezed between aquamarine seas and sheer cliffs. A world unto itself, the region evokes real images of Genoa and Pisa - perhaps more so than any other part of the island. The magnificent Cap' of Corsica has the singularity of being almost another island, for in the north, Corsica's mountainous spine juts far into the sea, creating one of the island's most extraordinarily beautiful spectacles. On the west coast of the Cap, narrow roads wind above a dramatically serrated coastline, dotted with little coves, whilst the sea washes on the rocks below and woods and maquis outline the peaks above. In spectacularly beautiful villages which cling tenaciously to the steep slopes, the baroque churches and elegant mansions contrast with simple slate-roofed cottages and a sublime landscape. The wealth which built the palatial houses came not from Cap Corse's fishermen and farmers but from their sons who sought fortune in the gold mines of South America. Fortunes were also made from alcohol by the Cap Corse family who invented Corsica's own home-grown, martini-like aperitif aptly C a p N to the beach, whilst the less energetic can reach the beach - huge enough to feel deserted even in the height of summer - by car. Away from the beach there is the rest of fascinating Cap Corse to explore, whilst St Florent - and the vineyards of Patrimonio - are less than a 30-minute drive away. I. de la Giraglia Barcaggio I. Finocchiarola Centuri Rogliano e Macinaggio Pino C o Santa Severa named Cap Corse'. The whole of Cap Corse is theatrical and Nonza, halfway up the west coast, is sheer melodrama. The vast sweep of the famous black' beach, which is really a greeny-grey, highlights the distinctive deep blue of the sea. Soaring above the beach is a beetling cliff, topped by a tower, on whose slightly gentler opposite slopes snuggle the narrow streets and higgledy-piggledy houses of Nonza village. From this delightful maze of cottages, where luscious tropical plants stand out vibrantly against sober slate roofs, the views across the sea to the coast of the Gulf of St Florent are splendid. The really fit can descend the hundreds of steps from Nonza Climate Cap Corse Apr 17 Lama Cap Corse r s Pt di Canelle 1307 Marine de Pietracorbara Marine de Sisco Erbalunga Sisco Nonza Pt de Mignole Pietranera Patrimonio Bastia St Florent CAP CORSE 10 km 9km u bbi Ne © TUI 2006 Average daily maximum temperature (ºC) May 20 Jun 24 Jul 27 Aug 28 Sept 25 Oct 21 84
