Kefalonia In the south are gloriously long stretches of sandy beach; in the centre the summits are almost untracked. In the north the island terminates in a beautiful cypress-carpeted peninsula. Kefalonia has a grandeur unequalled by any of the other Ionian Islands. It is the largest and is almost entirely comprised of mountain ranges, so the scenery is dramatic and varied. South of Argostoli (the island's capital) is an attractive shoreline fringed with beaches ranging from little coves to endless sweeps of golden sand, such as those at Scala and Lourdas. A number of attractive fishing villages including Sparita, Katelios and Ratzakli, line the superb sandy beaches of Southern Kefalonia. At the other tip of the island is the Erissos Peninsula, a slender finger of land beautifully clothed in firs, pines and cypresses. Uniquely in Kefalonia, the beautiful old buildings of Erissos survived the 1953 earthquake. The atmosphere of the countryside here is magical. At the tip of the peninsula is Fiskardo - one of the most captivating seaside villages in the whole of Greece. The picturesque fishing village of Assos, with its jumble of tiny, colour-washed houses, is built on a narrow isthmus linked to the headland on which sits a Venetian castle. Just to the south is the breathtaking beach of Myrtos, one of the most photogenic beaches in the whole of Greece. Virtually opposite on the east coast of the peninsula is the natural horseshoe-shaped bay of Aghia Efimia, a colourful harbour town.
