Kalkan & Fethiye Once a traditional fishing village, Kalkan has grown into a holiday resort with a pretty harbour, modern hotels and good restaurants. Daily boat trips will take you around the bay and local beach clubs.Try the pretty little cove of Kaputas which lies at the opening of a striking mountain gorge, or catch a bus to lovely Patara beach, a conservation area renowned for its birds and turtle nesting sites. Inland you can take a tour to spectacular Salikent Gorge, a wooden walkway attached to the side of the gorge itself reaches the heart of the gorge, where you can paddle in cool spring water. Here you can hire plastic shoes if you want to scramble further up the gorge. Xanthos, 18 kilometres away, was once Lycia's most important city, and today you can explore a ruined monastery, temple, theatre and two extraordinary tall pillar tombs. The inhabitants of this ancient town were so independent that legend tells how they twice burnt themselves to death rather than submit to invaders.
